New Southend station launches

Southend Radio has launched at 8am today, after three weeks of tests on 105.1 FM. The locally owned station is broadcasting from a new building next to Adventure Island theme park in Southend-on-Sea. (more)

Southend-on-Sea's new local radio station will launch on Friday 28th March at 8am, RadioToday.co.uk can reveal. Southend Radio is part-owned by Tindle and won a licence in April 2006. (more)

Southend licence award explained

Ofcom have today published details of the reason why the recent licence award in Southend was won by Southend Radio. The RLC felt that the combined backing of Stockvale Limited and Provincial Radio Limited gives Southend Radio a strong degree of financial stability, and appropriate experience of operating small stations in similar markets nearby. The involvement of Provincial Radio Limited (which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tindle Radio) would give Southend Radio the opportunity to offer a combined advertising sell, which would be likely to place the new service in a much stronger financial position in relation to the heritage station Essex FM than might otherwise be the case. Southend Radio win Southend

Four companies submitted applications for the new local radio licence for Southend - but it has been won by Southend Radio - owners of a nearby station and Adventure Island in Southend. Southend Radio is owned by Stockvale Limited (80%), the owner of St Albans & Watford Broadcasting Company Limited, which is the Ofcom licensee for Herfordshire’s Mercury 96.6 FM and Provincial Radio Limited (20%), a subsidiary of Tindle Radio Holdings Limited. It will provide "a locally relevant radio station for Southend with news, information, engaging chat and great music from the 60s to today." (more)
