EXCLUSIVE: Full Sky Digital EPG listings after reshuffle

BizAsia.co.uk brings you the full Sky Digital channel listings as they will appear after the reshuffle. There are no changes planned for following EPG categories Documentaries, Sports, Adult and Radio. Sky plans to implement a marketing campaign through a number of different media prior to the changes taking place in order to inform viewers of the changes. The new channel line up is currently scheduled to be implemented on a genre by genre basis between 05:00 and 08:00 on the dates specified below. Asian radio industry gives DAB backing

DAB radio IS the future, say key players in the UK Asian radio sector. The industry is already split over DAB. Is it the cornerstone of the future of digital radio, or is it a hugely expensive white elephant that has already been overtaken by rival delivery platforms such as the web? Earlier this week, GCap Media announced it is to pull back from digital radio to help double profits as part of an overhaul which will see digital radio brands such as theJazz and Planet Rock close down (it has already closed down Core, Life and Disney). BizAsia.co.uk has spoken to the key figures of Asian radio industry who all unanimously supported DAB. Jenny Abramsky, Director, BBC Audio & Music "The BBC has been at the forefront of digital radio for more than ten years and remains fully committed to DAB and the other digital delivery platforms. There's an exciting future for radio. It is central to the lives of huge numbers of people who listen every week. "Recent RAJAR listening figures show that nearly 5.6 million people tune into BBC Radio via DAB each week and the BBC's digital-only networks continue to grow, with two networks – 6 Music and BBC 7 – recently posting record listening figures." Raj Baddhan, Station Manager, ZEE Radio “As a new player in the UK Asian DAB market, we are positive our carefully sifted programming will attract new listeners to digital radio. Programming, packaging and the marketing of the station are factors that can determine the popularity of one station; we aim to deliver on all three. Watch this space." John Ogden, Director, Club Asia "This is a very difficult time for Commercial stations who have been heavily exposed in DAB. Many groups pursued a "land grab" when DAB was launched. They are now realising that the costs of maintaining present simulcast services are largely unsustainable. "However, Commercial Radio is questioning the viability of DAB just as interest among retailers, manufacturers and listeners has never been higher. 23% of homes have DAB digital radio and 30% of homes are listening to radio on a digital platform. However, those listeners clearly demand more than a simulcast of what's already available on their old AM or FM frequencies. We remain excited about our role in the new Channel 4 led multiplex. It is clear to us at Club Asia that DAB has a role in a fast converging UK media industry. DAB is part of a bouquet of opportunities offered to listeners in the future. Listening via the internet and mobile technology will complete the picture. The key is providing new and exciting services that listeners can't get elsewhere" Surjit Singh Ghuman, Director, Asian FX and Panjab Radio "Panjab Radio has proved itself as a leading brand on digital radio with its niche programming. Once again we’re doing the same with Asian FX by offering an entity, which is individual but also something, which listeners have shown interest in. I’m hoping we can turn around the negative press DAB has been receiving of late by shaking up the market with our Asian FX, just like we did with Panjab Radio." Sunrise Radio, which is launching nationally on DAB early next-year refused to provide us with a quote on their plans. Digital radio platforms see upsurge in popularity

Digital radio listening on DAB and television has seen an upsurge in popularity, according to recently released data by RAJAR. The majority of digital listening is done on DAB sets but digital TV is also on the rise as an outlet, although the Internet’s share of listening has fallen slightly in the last quarter. The survey showed 15% (6.1 million adults) of radio listeners now tune in through a digital radio, which is an increase of nearly 3% on the last quarter of this year. The results showed also that 3% of listening happens via digital cable, satellite and terrestrial television. Listening via a mobile phone has also witnessed a steady increase in popularity, now with an audience share of 9.2%. 2.76 million people now listen to podcasts. This signifies good news for digital only Asian radio stations such as Panjab Radio, Q Asia, Asian Gold, Asian Plus, Sukh Sagar, Akash Radio amongst many others. Two new radio stations launch on Midlands DAB

The West Midlands today have two new Asian radio stations on DAB, both of which are from the same umbrella group - Panjab Radio. It signed a contract with MXR digital to be a service provider on their West Midlands multiplex earlier this year. The successful religious and entertainment station Panjab Radio has been available in London digitally for the past seven years. It can also be picked up on DAB in West Yorkshire. This is the first time Panjab Radio has branched into the Midlands to tap into the highly populated Panjabi market. Not snubbing its non-Panjabi audiences, Panjab Radio has also launched a new general Asian entertainment station steering towards the youth tentatively called Q Asia (previously known as Urban Asia). The station officially begins broadcasting (with presenters) at the start of 2008, until then it hopes to generate enough noise around the new addition as a direct commercial competitor to Radio XL, Sunrise Radio and its Punjabi Radio. Q Asia will be announcing its official name and programme line-up in the coming days, keep it with BizAsia.co.uk for the exclusive news break. Previously, Surjit Singh Ghuman Managing Director of Panjab Radio said, "My four years of hard work and determination to get on to West Midlands on DAB has finally paid off and feels like a dream coming true, but in reality the very hard task of getting the message to the Panjabi community will start now and our listeners will be over the moon as they will not be confined to a TV and instead listen to us on DAB digital radio anywhere in the home, work or whilst on the move." Diane Wray, Managing Director MXR Digital said, "I am really delighted that Panjab Radio are joining the rosta of stations broadcast by MXR in the West Midlands and look forward to working with the team to promote DAB in the area." Panjab secures MXR space

Panjab Radio has agreed a deal with MXR Digital to take over space previously used by jazzfm.com on the West Midlands regional multiplex. The station will launch on November 1st, and brings the total number of digital outlets for the station to three, as they already transmit on DAB in London and West Yorkshire. (more)

Panjab Radio all set to celebrate seven years

Popular digital station Panjab Radio is celebrating its seventh year on air this Sunday (2nd September) at its studios based in Hayes. The day will begin at 10am and finishing at 4pm, famous Panjabi singers from India Jeet Jagjit, Ranjit Bath and Banny A, UK artists K B Dhindsa and Kuldeep Purewal will be performing on the day. Managing Director, Surjit Singh Ghuman says, "Celebrating our birthday in signature Panjab Radio style is what we are known for. I honestly don’t think any other radio station provides for the community like we do and this is what Panjab Radio is about." The afternoon schedule consists of well known singers performing religious songs for the audience. All of the singers are flying in from Panjab for this event. Panjab Radio presenter Ricky quotes, "Keeping a mix of cultural singers in a religious environment caters to all of our listeners, we wanted to appeal to both our older listeners and the youth, by getting famous artists to perform live adds the extra sparkle to the event." Panjab Radio is a medium through which thousands of the world's Panjabi community, home and away, can express their views and opinions, whilst keeping in touch with their culture and roots. Panjab Radio can be heard on Sky Channel 0130, DAB Radio in Greater London and West Yorkshire and live online. (more)

RAJAR Results: Digital platform proving a big hit

For the first time since the introduction of the newly launched methodology (in January 2007), digital platforms (DAB, Digital TV, Internet) listening figures have been accounted for. The RAJAR results for the second quarter of this year reveals 12.8% of listening is now via a digital platform with digital listening hours totaling 136 million hours per week. Overall listening to digital only services is growing quickly, from 905,000 listeners in Q2, 2003 to 6.09 million in Q2, 2007 and during an average week 26.2% of the population (adults 15+) now listen to radio via a digital platform. This is encouraging news for digital-only radio stations like Panjab Radio, Islam Radio, Punjabi Radio, Asian Sound, Masti Radio and Yarr Radio, as they all broadcast on DAB in their respective regions. Panjab Radio was one of the first non-terrestrial Asian radio stations to broadcast on DAB. It launched at a time when DAB was a relatively unknown phenomenon and when public awareness in the Asian community of its benefits were low. Surjit Ghuman, Station Director of Panjab Radio welcomed today's news. "Panjab Radio sees DAB as the future of Radio and has invested heavily in this platform laying down a solid infrastructure and will continue doing so in the future, which will allow it to be at the forefront of broadcasting. Through its own in-house marketing campaign Panjab Radio has raised DAB’s profile significantly amongst the Asian community and sold thousands of DAB sets directly to its listeners." More to follow.
