Dutch broadcaster Arrow Media Group has started testing on 828 kHz, the frequency that will carry its new service Arrow Talks. Congratulations to Abbey FM's afternoon drive time presenter Mark Leigh who, along with his wife Vicky, have become parents for the first time. Felicity Jayne Leigh was born on Sunday 13th April weighing 7lb 6oz.Mark has hosted the afternoon show on the Barrow-in-Furness radio station since it launched in October 2006 and has previously worked for Tower FM in Bolton and The Bay in Lancaster. DutchMedia reports that it has learned directly from Arrow that it plans to use one of its newly acquired mediumwave frequencies for a station called Arrow Talks. No start date has been decided. Arrow hopes to find a business partner for the project, probably a newspaper publisher.Â

The winners of the five regional Dutch mediumwave licences advertised in November 2007 have been announced. Two have been awarded to Crosspoints BV, the company that owns Arrow Classic Rock and Arrow Jazz FM. This has caused great surprise in the Netherlands, given that Arrow recently relinquished the high power channel of 675 kHz. Research bureau Intomark GfK has published the Dutch radio listening figures for Oct/Nov 2007. There are no great surprises, but public network Radio 2 has narrowed the gap over market leader Radio 538. Dutch commercial station Arrow Classic Rock has now stopped broadcasting old material on its former mediumwave frequency 675 kHz. The frequency is now carrying a voice loop giving the terrestrial FM frequencies. Ramadan radio RSL’s deadline passes

The deadline to apply to Ofcom for an RSL (Restricted Service Licence) radio licence to cover the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan for 2008 has now passed, according to RadioToday.
Ofcom received a total of 71 applications, 16 of those coming from stations who would like to broadcast to the Bradford area.
Applications were also received for stations in Blackburn, Bolton, Bristol, Burton-on-Trent, Cardiff, Dudley, Dundee, Edinburugh, Glasgow, Halifax, Harrow, Hendon, Huddersfield, Keighley, Leeds, Leicester, London, Luton, Manchester, Middlesborough, Oldham, Peterborough, Preston, Reading, Sheffield, Slough, Sutton, Thornton Heath and Walsall.
Ofcom will decide in early 2008 which of the 71 applicants are successful. (more)

Dutch commercial broadcasters Arrow Classic Rock and Radio 10 Gold continue to broadcast on mediumwave for the time being. Arrow is using 675 kHz to broadcast a “second channel” which is a modified version of its main service on FM. The mediumwave transmitter is operating at reduced power to reduce running costs.

Dutch commercial broadcaster Arrow has just announced that it is buying the loss-making radio station Caz! from SBS Broadcasting. Arrow’s owner Ad Ossendrijver says that the plan is to start broadcasting the programmes of Arrow Classic Rock on the FM frequencies currently used by Caz! The transaction is expected to be completed by 30 June.

Dutch commercial broadcaster Arrow Classic Rock (675 kHz mediumwave) advises that the technical problems with its automated playout system have been fixed. The station has been broadcasting normal programmes since around 1300 UTC yesterday.

Dutch commercial radio station Arrow Classic Rock, which can be heard outside the Netherlands on mediumwave 675 kHz, is experiencing problems with its automation system. This has caused a number of silent periods. The station is continuing to broadcast what it describes as ”modified” programming while the problem is solved.

If there is data about the divorce habits of readers of particular newspapers, I am unaware of it. It would be fascinating to know, for example, whether the propensity for divorce is greater among Telegraph than among Independent readers. Do the obsessive upholders of traditional values for whom the Daily Mail caters veer less from the straight and narrow than Sun readers trying to absorb page three and watch Big Brother at the same time? Saga to bid for Manchester

Radiojam have exclusively revealed in this weeks issue that Saga will bid for the next analogue licence for Greater Manchester, despite losing out to XFM for the last licence.
It is the fourth licence win for MD Ron Coles, following successful station launches in the East and West Midlands, and Glasgow. Other applicants for the licence included GMG's Smooth FM and RockTalk, Macquarie's Diamond FM, as well as GCap's Fun Radio and Chrysalis's The Arrow - two digital formats that are yet to win an analogue licence, despite numerous applications. Abbey FM appoint Manager

Abbey FM, the new radio station for Barrow-in-Furness have appointed its Station Manager who will turn the winning licence application into a fully operational radio station.
Andrew Turner, a formerly with TLRC-owned 99.8FM 2BR in East Lancashire has left his position at the Nelson-based station to start a new role in South Cumbria. His first task is to secure premises for the station to broadcast from, followed by recruiting staff to help launch and run Abbey FM. (more)
Dutch Media Authority gives go-ahead for Arrow takeover

The Dutch Media Authority has given its approval for the takeover of the Arrow Media Group (Arrow Classic Rock and Arrow Jazz FM) by Crosspoints BV, a company with PCM Publishers as the sole shareholder. Under Dutch media law, no publisher can operate a commercial radio station if it has one third or more of the daily newspaper market. PCM Publishers agree in principle to buy Arrow media group

Amsterdam-based PCM Uitgevers, one of the largest publishers in the Dutch language, has reached agreement in principle to buy Arrow Classic Rock and Arrow Jazz FM. The stations, with clearly defined target audiences, together reach about 2 million listeners a month. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed in the announcement.

Arrow's two radio stations likely to be sold

Dutch commercial stations Arrow Classic Rock and Arrow Jazz FM are likely to be sold shortly. Current owner Willem van Kooten has told de Telegraaf that he is in discussions with several parties about buying the stations. However, nothing definite has been decided. It's possible that the two stations will be sold separately to different owners. (more)

Northeast applications now online

The thirteen applications submitted for the Northeast regional FM radio licence are now available on the Ofcom website.
The applications show the proposals from all thirteen documents. In brief, they are: UK Media and TLRC application as 3 Rivers Radio, GCap Media's two applications as FUN fm and XFM, UTV's All Talk FM, Chrysalis' All Rock Radio The Arrow, Celador's Touch FM for the 45+ age group, CN-Group's Northlife providing non-biased speech and music programming, Canwest's Original FM which is similar to the recently won Solent licence, Saga's 50+ service, Tim Schoonmaker and Radio UK Holdings Diamond FM (rock music), North East One - offering a grown up station with pop, rock and oldies, and finally GMG radio apply using two proposals as Rock Talk FM and Smooth FM.
