"If any pay for performance scheme were ever to be implemented in a blanket fashion that very well might be the result - which, for the record, would be a bad thing! "However, in an online world where attention is firstly more valued and more difficult to get, and secondly increasingly measurable it surely comes as no surprise that questions about how to maximise it arise from time to time." Comment Is Free: Jarvis vs Tomasky: what rules for citizen journalists?
From Journalism.co.uk. Posted April 25 2008, 1.09pm
Media commentator Jeff Jarvis and Guardian America editor Michael Tomasky debate whether citizen journalists have the same responsibilities as a journalist when reporting news. Jarvis: 'openness for all' "With more openness and more reporting - by all - we will end up with more stories, the public will get more information, and politicians will learn that anything and everything they say and do can (and should) be reported," writes Jarvis. Tomasky: Cit-j accounts need verification "And very few journalists I know would favour '[hiding] anything from the public.' They would, however, favour not publishing something until it's verified. That's scarcely complicity in secret-keeping. That's just being responsible." (more)

My Mentor: Sarah Mukherjee on Stephen Mitchell
From The Independent. Posted April 21 2008, 12.00am
I first met Steve Mitchell when I left local radio and started working for a little- known but vital part of the BBC called GNS, the General News Service, and he was my boss's boss. It supplies all the national and international news to the BBC's network of local radio stations. The combined audience is huge and tends to be the people the BBC is often accused of ignoring – those on lower incomes, the elderly, people living in rural areas. GNS reporters break national and international stories, produce great original journalism and are well-known names outside the M25. However, they're unknown within TV Centre. And if people don't know your work, they don't trust your editorial judgement. And, more importantly, don't give you a job. We used to call it the "Hotel California". (more)
