When a young Irish entrepreneur named Ronan O'Rahilly founded pirate station Radio Caroline in 1964, he also established a great British tradition. Not only did the actions of O'Rahilly and his fellow radio pirates force the BBC to start playing pop music, they left in their wake a great cultural legacy for everyone in Britain, a heritage we should all be proud of. They instilled in us the innate capability to become first-rate media pirates. (more)
Super Station appoints new PD

Chris Cary dies in Tenerife

Radio presenter Chris Cary has died in Tenerife at the age of 61. Cary, better known to millions of UK Radio listeners as Spangles Muldoon, suffered a stroke while working on the island, and died in hospital. Legendary radio presenter Chris Cary has died whilst on holiday in Tenerife at the age of 61. Chris, better know on-air as Spangles Muldoon launched Radio Nova and spent many years at Radio Caroline and Radio Luxembourg. (more)

Big screen movie about Radio Caroline reportedly planned

Filmmaker Richard Curtis is apparently making a movie about pirate radio. The Love Actually director is moving away from his traditional romantic comedies to make a film about Radio Caroline, which started broadcasting from a boat off the coast of Essex in the 60s, reports The Sun.

Radio Caroline is to re-broadcast on FM in Europe thanks to the services of Radio Tatras International. The special broadcast is to mark the 40th Anniversary of the passing of the Marine Offences Act in which all pirate radio stations closed down, with the exception of Caroline. (more)

Bob Lawrence is back on Caroline

Bob Lawrence makes a welcome return to Radio Caroline this week with a new show every weekday at 9am.
Top 15s will be just that - listeners 15 favourite tracks played on-air. The station had a great success with the Caroline Listeners All-Time Top 500 earlier this year that they felt it only right to give listeners the opportunity to hear more personal choice. (more)
Radio Caroline finally appears on Sky EPG

From today, UK satellite broadcaster Radio Caroline is accessible in the UK and Ireland via Sky's Electronic Programme Guide (EPG). It has been broadcasting on the Eurobird satellite at 28.5 degrees east for a considerable time, but had to be manually added, and many Sky subscribers were unaware of its existence. Radio Caroline launches on Sky

Monday 12th June 2006 - another milestone for the original Radio Caroline as the station is now available for the Electronic Programme Guide on Sky.
The station can be found on channel 0199 after a long campaign by the group to bring Caroline to the wider audience. Peter Moore, station manager reminds people visiting their website that they are the original Radio Caroline: "Yes, we are the same station that famously broadcast from ships at sea from 1964 to 1990. We might still be at sea had it not been for a dramatic shipwreck and a sinister change to UK law." (more)
Radio Caroline loses slot on Technisat bouquet via Astra 19.2E

UK-based satellite broadcaster Radio Caroline has announced that it will no longer be carried by Technisat as part of their Music Bouquet subscription service from the end of March. Popular British DJ Johnnie Walker collects his MBE

Yesterday was a special day for popular British DJ Johnnie Walker, 60, as he went to Buckingham Palace to receive his MBE from Prince Charles. The MBE was awarded for his services to radio over a period of 40 years. Johnnie said that the Prince asked him about his time on Radio Caroline, to which he replied "I was a bit naughty, I disobeyed the law. It would seem I've been forgiven." Johnnie says (more)

Chris Edwards writes: Sylvain Tack is best remembered for Radio Mi Amigo, whose financial input from hiring of airtime on Radio Caroline in the mid-1970's, undoubtably helped Caroline continue.
Since the end of Mi Amigo, Tacks life had not been so good. Five years in prison for drug smuggling and an unsuccessful alternative medicine enture had led to an increasingly lonely life in recent years. (more)

Offshore Echos have announced the opening of the website "The Radio Caroline Story." Radio Caroline is probably the most famous of all the offshore radio stations, and over the years become something of a broadcasting legend. However all good legends are a mix of fact and fiction, none more so than Caroline, and the story has many myths associated with it.

Johnnie Walker receives MBE for services to broadcasting

Mike Barraclough reports: Johnnie Walker has been awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List for services to broadcasting.
The Times reports that Johnnie said he was pleased that he had been forgiven for being a pirate radio disc jockey in the 1960's. "Having defied Her Majesty's Government in 1967 with the pirate radio ship Radio Caroline, I never expected to see my name in the Honours," he (more)
