Capital Radio was the second commercial station to go on-air in the UK, going live on 5.00am on Tuesday 16th October. The first programme controller was Michael Bukht, and the station broadcast on 539m MW, 95.8 FM.

The first track played, after the National Anthem, was 'Bridge over Troubled Water' by Simon and Garfunkel, played by Dave Symonds.

Capital Radio changed frequency to 194m MW (1548 kHz) in 1975, and split to form Capital Gold and Capital FM as separate services in 1988.
