History
The station launched on 1st October 1974 as Radio Hallam on 194m (1548khz AM), 95.2 and 95.9 MhZ FM - with the first voice on air being ex Radio 1 jock,Johnny Moran. The launch was not without incident though - the first record,"I've Got The Music In Me" by Kiki Dee,stuck after a minute and an half, and later on in the same morning,a window in a studio broke after arc lights used to cover the event by Yorkshire Television caused glass to crack. The frequencies were changed in the 80's to include changes to the station's TSA,becoming 97.4 for Sheffield,102.9 for Barnsley and 103.4 for the rest of South Yorkshire, and 194m becoming 1548AM - a frequency allotted to Classic Gold after the Broadcasting Act 1990 and now part of the Magic AM network.
A further transmitter, Rotherham's 96.1, was switched off in the late 1990s as a condition of Hallam's renewal of franchise. The transmitter was switched off by the then programme director, Dave Shearer with additional power being increased to the 102.9 and 103.4 frequencies to cover the loss.
Hallam used to be based at Hartshead,in Sheffield City Centre. It moved in the mid 1990s to its current home at 900 Herries Road, just minutes from Hillsborough (the home of Sheffield Wednesday FC).Both office and studio space at Hartshead is now used by journalists who create the local newspaper, the Sheffield Star.
