From Media UK's The Knowledge. Last update: 22:07, 29 Mar 2005 by James Cridland.

Taken over in the mid 1990s, the Metro Radio Group plc was formed initially of Metro FM, TFM, and Great North Radio, covering the Tyne Tees area. Head office was in Metro FM's studio centre in Swalwell.

In 1990, the Metro Radio Group took over the Yorkshire Radio Network, and inherited Pennine FM, Hallam FM, Viking FM and Classic Gold.

The Metro Radio Group were behind Pennine FM's relaunch as The Pulse, and Classic Gold's relaunch into Great Yorkshire Radio, then Great Yorkshire Gold.

Recognised for creative and sales excellence, many of the Metro Radio Group's executives went on to form The Radio Partnership after its takeover by Emap.
