Multiplex

From Media UK's The Knowledge. Last update: 19:46, 17 Apr 2005 by James Cridland.

A multiplex is used in digital broadcasting to enable more than one channel to occupy the same set of frequencies.

On digital terrestrial television, or DAB digital radio, multiplexes are limited to the small amount of available frequencies.

On digital satellite television, a multiplex is generally on each transponder of the satellite. While frequencies are still limited, the amount of transponders are considerably larger, and hence the amount of channels on satellite are bigger than other platforms.
