So, Richard Desmond has spent lots of cash on the Big Brother format that Channel 4 junked ceremoniously last year.

The Big Brother geordie voice is still doing it (hello, Marcus Bentley); and Brian Dowling, a former winner, will be hosting it, rather than Davina.

There’s a very quick promo here:

So, will you be watching? Or is Big Brother a bit, y’know, 2000?

Never have. Can’t imagine I ever will.

Will give it a try but having been to the auditions I think it will be a case of trying to hard to have a hit.

Rob Pobjoy posted on Sunday 24th July 2011 at 17:55

I have never really seen the appeal of it, and to be quite frank I think its rather boring… I have better ways to waste my time.

It on to long, take up too much of you time.
And for what! To make some one famous for five minuites,
Should do it for charity.

I think it’s past its sell by date. People will give it a look, sure, but I’m not sure that Brian Dowling will captivate the audience and there’s not much that they can do that hasn’t been already.

I personally only paid attention to series three (the one with Kate, Jonny, Alex and Jade – In fact, that’s probably the most successful series per people that stuck around thereafter), but there’s too much on television now that makes Big Brother seem dated.

It’ll be good for Channel 5, though, as they should see some big figures, at least initially.

I will be there!

Annoying, because I thought we’d seen the back of it at long last. I predict it’ll flop on C5 though. If you look at other shows which have moved there (notably Home & Away and Neighbours) they just don’t pick up the figures they did on their original networks. In fact, they don’t come anywhere close.

Martin Phillp posted on Saturday 30th July 2011 at 17:49

This is Richard Desmond’s biggest gamble yet, not only has C5 got to improve it’s share, Big Brother is fodder for his publishing arm, especially for the Daily Star, OK!, New and Star mag.

Another media mogul trying to expand this empire?

Martin Phillp posted on Saturday 30th July 2011 at 20:35

Until Desmond’s acquisition of Channel 5, he was more known for running adult channels and magazines, alongside OK! and Express Newspapers. BB is another attempt to bring him into the mainstream.

Dave Hedley posted on Sunday 31st July 2011 at 04:00

It is entirely possible, then, that the Daily Star could give it excessive coverage while the multitude of rival newspapers outside of his ownership seek to bury it. Then again, as Steve said below, there’s so much news right now that a cover story about Big Brother could (rightly) be deemed ridiculous.

Martin Phillp posted on Sunday 31st July 2011 at 11:52

That could be to his advantage, the Star isn’t considered a ‘serious’ newspaper which even The Sun has more news content.

As BB is a niche brand these days, the market left for gossip will go for the Northern and Shell publications. Bauer’s Heat mag may still go for it as long as editor Lucie Cave’s interested in it.

No, because its rubbish, chasing ratings, desperation TV.

Mike Baker posted on Wednesday 31st August 2011 at 12:34

Well, the saving grace is that they haven’t messed around with their high quality US imports like CSI and Law & Order SVU. I did sample BB – they are struggling to make an interesting hour out of nothing, and the contestants are all rather childish. I suspect the ratings will drop after the initial interest. The Bachelor, on the other hand, is well produced and – although staged – does hold your attention to the end, leaving you wanting more.

I worked on Big Brother as a Cameraman [BB-4] now Channel 5 has it hands on it “No More For Me”.
