Digi-Box to Old Analogue TV

posted on Thursday 20th June at 11:09

I have a really nice TV from the 80’s that has an excellent picture. I have 2 digiboxes spare and would like to see if I can get a gadget to convert D to A to put in a co-ax ariel socket in the back so I can watch TV on it. Anyone know if such a gadget exists and where I can get one?

Yep it is easy to do.

As your TV is from the 80s it probably won’t have a SCART connection, so as you say, you need to connect a box to the TV using co-ax.

My advice is either find a box with a UHF modulator built-in – good quality set top boxes may have one built in, cheap tat from Tesco/Asda/Argos etc.. won’t OR go to a high street shop like Maplin and buy a UHF modulator and use any set top box you like.

Something like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philex-28207RF-Satellite-Receiver-Modulator/dp/B003922ZF4/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1371738423&sr=1-7&keywords=freeview+modulator

Even if the TV has no SCART socket, it may have a “composite video in”. They are usually a “phono” socket, and usually come with two identical photo sockets for left and right sound input (or just one for mono).

You can easy get a SCART->composite lead.

It’s much better to do it this way than using a modulator, the picture quality is vastly better.

I’ve struggled to find any boxes that output UHF. It’s SCART/RCA or bust these days!

Bear in mind the box will output stereo sound, and a TV from the 80s will almost certainly be mono, so if you go the composite route, you’ll need to “merge” L+R into one channel somehow.

Some boxes (Like my Humax) do have an option for “mono” or “stereo” in the set up menu.

A Goodmans GDR11 has both RF Modulator and SCART and would work on any TV.
