Why change channel at a crucial time?

Why do they change from one channel to the other in the middle of a tennis game. I was watching Roger Federers match this morning/afternoon, it was the 2nd set and the score was 5-1 in games and 40-40, then they announced the change of channel, I quickly changed, not to find the match I was watching in progress, oh no, but a studio discussion, missing the final points of the 2nd set – this is ridiculous!! Not only that but I had set my Sky plus to record on this channel before I went to work, luckily I was watching when this change occurred and was able to record the rest of the match on the other channel! I would have missed it had I already set off for work.

I also so agree with a previous comment regarding the verbal diarrhoea the commentators suffer from particularly during points! Why cant’ they just shut up?! Is there anywhere we can complain about the above!! I’m sick of it! RANT OVER

Do you have Eurosport HD by any chance?

I’ve noticed that sometimes Eurosport have three seperate events at the same time, one on British Eurosport, another on British Eurosport 2 and a third on Eurosport HD.

Unlike Sky Sports, Eurosport HD is not always a carbon copy of the main channel.

Hi Ash,

thanks for your comments, in reply, I don’t have HD. I was watching the above on British Eurosport 2 at the time they announced the change to British Eurosport 1 but when I changed over it wasn’t on, it came on eventually before the start of the next set. Why couldn’t they have just completed the set before switching?

Hi Mary,

I have no idea, I’m afraid. What were they showing on British Eurosport instead? Have you contacted Eurosport to let them know how you feel, what have they said?

Hi Ash,

there was tennis on both eurosport channels, they just went from Rogers match to Del Potro’s match at that particular moment and said that the Federer match would now go to Eurosport 1, but they were in the studio when i switched. I dont know any contact details to complain or I would.

thanks

Mary,

I dont know any contact details to complain or I would.

There’s a contact phone number and email address listed in the Media UK Directory – http://www.mediauk.com/tv/28200/british-eurosport

(You would have been on that page when you started this thread)

Well, no doubt we will have the annual channel switching farce at the BBC for Wimbledon. Shunting programmes off of BBC1 just because Andy Murray is playing or whatever. Why can’t Wimbledon just be on BBC2 and be done with it. Saves all the hassle.

Do they still do that now DSO’s nearly complete? The main issue in the 00’s with putting BBC1 shows onto BBC2 was that regional news couldn’t be shown on BBC2 digital, only analogue. That’s obviously no longer an option for nearly all TV regions.

I’ve never understood the logic when both channels can be picked up by everyone. I really don’t think less people would tune into Murray on BBC2 than they would BBC1.

The funny thing is, anything on BBC1 will get more viewers than if it were on BBC2.

There is a shockingly high number of people who switch on their TV and just continue watching whatever channel comes up, which depending on what equipment they have will either be the last channel they watched before switching off or BBC1, and never look to see what else is on.

Similarly to what Tim says, even in this age of Electronic Programme Guides a lot of people will still just switch to the main channels of BBC 1 or ITV 1 without looking what is on, just out of the habit that it will be something familiar or popular that “they should be watching” – thus a big Wimbledon game on when you switch on they will pick up viewers on the “it must be a good game” basis because it’s on the primary BBC One channel
