Al Jazeera English wins gong at TV festival
From Biz Asia. Posted June 13 2008, 12.21pm
Al Jazeera English (AJE) has won the award for 'Best 24 Hour News Programme' at the prestigious 48th Monte Carlo Television Festival. The Award recognized Al Jazeera English's extensive international reach and efforts to dig deeper to give its international audience a richer understanding of the events that affect their lives. Al Jazeera English beat entries from BBC News, Sky News, Lisboa TV and the Phoenix Satellite Television Company to take home the award. Among the specific reports highlighted at the Festival were Nour Odeh's groundbreaking reports from Gaza, where she brought the suffering of the Gazan people to life when she was caught in the middle of a violent street battle between Hamas and Fatah. While shooting live in Gaza, Nour and her producer Ashraf Al-Amritti lost contact with the newsroom in Doha and were forced to rely on their mobile phone to continue reporting events as they occurred. Once the live video feed returned, Nour's cameraman, Iyad Al-Dahdouh, filmed the continued fighting while coming under RPG and small arms fire. Following the broadcast of the fighting on Al Jazeera, both sides in the Gaza battles agreed to a ceasefire. In addition to 'Best 24 Hour News Programme', AJE received nominations in every news category at the awards show, including 'Best TV Item' for James Bays' Taliban Embedded, which was awarded a second place prize, and 'Best News Documentary' for Tony Birtley's Inside Myanmar - The Crackdown. Commenting on the nominations, AJE's Managing Director Tony Burman said, "I am very excited that the AJE Newshour has been recognized as the best 24 hour news program in the world. For me, the award demonstrates the commitment of AJE's staff to giving a voice to the voiceless, of telling vital stories that are not on the agenda of the western news networks. Whether risking their lives to cover the bloodshed in Gaza, to travel with a Taliban cell in Afghanistan or to tell the world the real story from inside Myanmar, where we are the only international broadcaster with a permanent presence, AJE employees are telling the untold story and are putting real people back at the center of the news agenda. I am extremely proud that the world is paying attention to the hard work and dedication of the AJE staff, and each and every one of them should be congratulated for this recognition." Al Jazeera English launched in November 2006 with the goal of balancing the flow of news from the global south to the north and covering stories which are rarely seen in international news broadcasts. Using broadcast centers strategically placed in Kuala Lumpur, Doha, London and Washington, DC and bureaus around the world, AJE is posed to continue bringing its unique perspective on world events to over 110 million households around the world. My Week In Media: Lembit Opik
From The Independent. Posted March 10 2008, 12.00am
Last week I watched...BBC News 24. The Obama-Clinton race for the Democrat candidacy is such an oddity. It reminds me of The West Wing. I know Ohio quite well as I used to work there one week a month for Procter & Gamble, before I became an MP, and I thought Hillary would be their kind of gal. But the drama of Obama is large in the unpredictability of the results. Obviously, I watched the news of the referendum vote. I voted with Nick Clegg because he is an expert on Europe and I didn't want to read the 200 pages of the EU Treaty myself when I trusted his judgement. He is under zero threat to his leadership. Even the people who resigned don't want him to go. We're a pretty close-knit little team and when the Lib Dems have arguments, we do it in a respectful way. (more)

Sky News has once again triumphed at the Royal Television Society awards. The channel was named News Channel of the Year beating BBC News 24, who won the award last year. The RTS judges commented on Sky News' "immediacy, impact, variety of coverage" and commended the way it covered the big stories, the way they were presented and its "sharp and intelligent reporting". Head of Sky News, John Ryley said: "Journalism is all about teamwork -by everyone on screen and off screen. It's a brilliant achievement and a tribute to our energy, creativity and competitive spirit." Sky News has won the award six times in the last seven years. Meanwhile, Sky News Correspondent Dominic Waghorn scooped the prestigious Television Journalist of the Year award and also the International News award for a special report on baby-snatching in China. Dominic said: "This means an enormous amount to me. It can be fiendishly difficult working in China so this makes what we achieved all the more worthwhile." Former Head of Sky News Nick Pollard won a Lifetime Achievement Award. On behalf of the judges, Stewart Purvis, former Chief Executive ITN, paid tribute to Nick saying, "In his ten years of running Sky News, he transformed the channel. He did it with innovation, with passion and large dollops of imagination, humanity and common sense." Related link: BBC News 24 wins 'News Channel of the Year' (more)

Sky News now available at rail stations
From SkyDigi Online. Posted February 1 2007, 3.15pm
Sky News will from today be offering dedicated news, weather and sport content to two thirds of the UK’s regular rail commuters. The deal with Titan, who provide giant digital screens was struck last October meaning Sky News would replace BBC News on the big screens. The agreement between Titan and Sky gives commuters the most up-to-date, breaking news service in railway stations, utilising a new technology application which sees bespoke, real-time news delivered individually - and continually - to each of the stations covered in the network. The nature of the segments carried on the screens will vary across the course of the day, in line with the changing demands of station audiences. For example, content will be skewed towards business news in the peak morning rush hour, and in the evening, more showbiz and sport content will be carried. John Ryley, Head of Sky News, said: "Sky News is continually looking for ways to innovate in delivering its award-winning news coverage to audiences. This partnership with Titan on their market-leading Transvision network of screens delivers news to commuters with an unmatched level of tailoring and sophistication. Through TV, online, mobile and now outdoor, Sky News is committed to a strategy of bringing breaking news to audiences, no matter where they might find themselves."
