Aaqil appointed multicultural role at C4

Channel 4 has announced the appointment of Aaqil Ahmed as its new Multicultural Commissioning Editor. He will still remain the commissioning editor for religion.
The new role has been created as part of Channel 4's promise to reconnect with its mission to give a voice to minorities. The broadcaster is injecting £2m to commission more multicultural programmes in peak time.
Under the brand 'Next on 4 initiatives', Channel 4 will foster greater diversity within its shows and working practices.
Julian Bellamy, Head of Channel 4, said: "Aaqil already has a strong track record in commissioning powerful and provocative films for Channel 4. His new role will enable him to extend his role into 9pm and 10pm, and will encourage new multicultural ideas and talent to find a home at the Channel."
Aaqil Ahmed said: "This is an exciting moment with Channel 4’s renewed commitment to multicultural programming and I’m looking forward to helping to deliver a distinctive take on what modern multicultural programming should be."
Aaqil has been behind the current ongoing season on Islam, which includes the Antony Thomas' documentary 'The Quran'. (more)

I wouldn't have been aware of the American chat show influences that he drew from, such as David Letterman and Jay Leno, but I was intrigued by him. "Knife mad Britain", says the Sunday Mirror. "Girl 13, knifed in playground", is a headline in London's Evening Standard. "Crime of our time", opines the Daily Mail. Read virtually any story on knife crime and you are left in no doubt that the press sees it as a growing problem, with the ages of those involved helping to drive the subject to the top of the media agenda. But for award-winning writer Roy Williams, who has been commissioned by Channel 4 to shed light on this wave of stabbings by making a 90-minute drama as a centrepiece for its Disarming Britain season, tabloid stories do little more than scratch the surface of the issue. Channel 4's 'Britz' to be aired in America

Channel 4's popular one-off drama 'Britz' two British-born Muslims has been acquired by cable channel BBC America.
The deal means, 'Britz' will be shown on US TV later this year.
The 2 x 120-minute miniseries, directed by Peter Kosminsky (The Government Inspector) and produced by Daybreak Pictures, was sold to BBC America by Channel 4 International.
'Britz' was shown on Channel 4 last October.
