From Biz Asia. Posted August 21 2008, 11.15pm

Confirming the news to TellyChakkar, ZEE TV Programming Head Ajay Bhalwankar says, "Hadsaa will be pulled off air for certain strategic reasons."

Producer of the show, Karan Oberoi said, "Well, I’m still to receive any official communication from the channel. You never know we might get a extension. The channel will have its own reason to drop the show, so I’m not the right person to comment why it is going off air."

Good news for soap lovers, 'Maayka' will be shown Monday - Friday as oppose to the current Monday - Thursday format from next month.

Colors has further consolidated its position at number 3 in the all-important Hindi channels ranking, three weeks after its launch.
According to TAM Media Research data, in Week 31 and Week 32, Colors has garnered a share of 10 per cent and 11 per cent respectively, in the overall GEC space. STAR Plus stands at number 1 with 27 per cent and ZEE TV is second, with 17 per cent share for Week 32.
Colors has managed to race ahead of Sony Entertainment Television Asia, which, despite its position in the GEC space, was at number three in Week 30. SET India has gathered a share of 9 per cent and is now at number four, along with Star One. The other two new GECs, NDTV Imagine and 9X have settled at number five position with a channel share of 7 per cent each. Apart from these two reality shows, the channel has a mythological programme 'Jai Shri Krishna' and 'Balika Vadhu', which drew an average TVR of 2.93 and 2.07, in Week 32.

Aditya Narayan set to make movie debut
From Biz Asia. Posted August 12 2008, 3.03pm
ZEE TV's 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' host Aditya Narayan will be making his Bollywood debut as a grown up in Vikram Bhatt's new flick.
A Bollywood Hungama reporter got confirmation from the director himself, "Yes, I am launching Aditya. I haven't titled the film yet, but it's an adventure film, besides being a love story. Actually, it's very difficult to describe the genre of the film. Why Aditya? That's because he comes across as a confident lad, he sings well, he has screen presence. But, most importantly, I always go by instinct," Vikram tells me.
Rumours are rife that Vikram is planning to cast two leading ladies, one of them being Deepika Padukone. "Yes, the film will star two ladies, but Deepika didn't cross my mind. I don't know how this rumour originated in the first place. The fact is Deepika wouldn't like to be associated with a project that stars new faces. After all, she's working with established names. I am on the lookout for two fresh faces," he clarifies. Vikram plans to begin filming next year.

ZEE Next to rope in foreign partner
From Biz Asia. Posted August 3 2008, 12.11am
ZEE Network's second entertainment channel ZEE Next, sister station of ZEE TV, will be given a fresh lease of life with help from a foreign partner.
In other news today concerning the channel, ZEE Next is being hived off to its wholly-owned subsidiary Asia Today Limited.
According to IndianTelevision, Hong Kong-based ATL will invest Rs 1 billion in ZEE Next over a three-year period while the partner will put in Rs 4 billion.
ATL's holding initially will be 45 per cent in the company that will hold ZEE Next and kids programming while the investing partner will own the rest. ATL's stake will go up to 55-60 per cent in five years.
"ATL will invest in convertible debentures within five-year period to be issued by ZEE Next. The shareholding of ATL for the purpose of consolidation, prior to conversion of debenture would be 45 per cent and post conversion of CD within 5 year would go up to 55 – 60 per cent," the source adds.
ZEE is hiving off ZEE Next as it doesn't want to capture the start-up losses of the newly-launched Hindi general entertainment channel.
ZEE Next, which was expected to launch in the UK on Sky Digital in July has been pushed back to September/October. More details soon.

Colors opens up with encouraging figures
From Biz Asia. Posted August 2 2008, 2.16am
The newly launched channel Colors from Viacom 18 Media has opened up to a positive response across India.
Data issued to BizAsia.co.uk for the week ending 26th July saw Colors start with 81 gross rating points (GRPs).
Compared to other recently launched Indian TV channels, Colors has had a spectacular launch. Earlier this year, NDTV Imagine garnered 55 GRPs in its first week of launch (20-26 January). 9X, on the other hand, recorded a GRP of 21, but later climbed the ratings ladder. ZEE Next crawled with a 6 GRP in its opening week.
Colors lags behind market leader STAR Plus, ZEE TV, Sony TV, NDTV Imagine, 9X and STAR One. Colors clarifies that the 81 GRPs have come from five-and-half days of programming while the other channels have captured the ratings for seven days. Observers also say the second week ratings will indicate the actual positioning of the channel.
The GEC market seems to have expanded with the new launches. "Clearly, the market has grown. After the first week of sampling, now the effort is to hold up the stake. The important thing here is that our ratings are not driven by a single show but by three different programmes," says Kamat.
Colors' big ticket reality show 'Fear Factor-Khatron Ke Khiladi' has opened with 1.7 (on 21st July) TVR, which went to a high of 2.27 on 24th July. 'Balika Vadhu' managed a high TVR of 1.26 and mythological 'Jai Sri Krishna' notched a maximum of 0.92 TVR on 21st July.
Colors will launch the second season of 'Bigg Boss' after completion of 16-episodes of its driver show 'Fear Factor'. The channel has already endorsed original format (Big Brother) winner Shilpa Shetty for the show.
Whilst there are plans to launch Colors in the UK, there is no concrete information on this. TV Eighteen's previous channel CNN IBN was available in the South Asia World avatar before ending after its distribution agreement ended with ZEE Network UK.

Sindoora in ZEE TV's 'Dulhann' to be killed off?
From Biz Asia. Posted August 2 2008, 2.08am
The highly popular 'Dulhann Banoo Mein Teri' on ZEE TV is set for a huge shakeup as reports suggest the antagonist character Sindoora (Kamya Punjabi) could be killed off!
A report in TellyChakkar said she could be killed by lead male protagonist Amar (Sharad Malhotra).
A spokesman told the TV website, "Yes, Sindoora's character will come to an end but it's yet to be decided on how it will be done. Probably, it could be Amar or both Amar and Divya (Divyanka Tripathy) who'll do the honours. There's also a possibility that Sindoora may not be killed but she'd be taken to court by Divya, who is a lawyer."
When contacted, Kamya replied, "I'm sorry but we've been strictly told not to speak anything. All I can say is that something interesting is indeed coming up. However, I'm very keen on remaining with the show."
Producer Shyam Bhattacharya was quick to rubbish the news. (more)
STAR Plus commands 11% India market share
From Biz Asia. Posted July 31 2008, 12.04am
STAR Plus, India's leading Hindi entertainment channel has racked up 11% of the market share. This is the largest portion in this space, bigger than ZEE TV and Sony Entertainment Television Asia put together.
A report in Economic Times indicates soaps are still the main drivers and STAR Plus has overcome viewer fatigue with innovative content and fresh story lines.
Speaking to PTI here today, Keertan Adhyantaya, Executive Vice-President and General Manager, highlighted the latest Television Audience Measurement (TAM) data and said the channel has remained undisputed leader in the Hindi general entertainment channel space for the last nine years.
"Audience ratings in the first half of 2008 clearly demonstrates that STAR Plus has retained a lead over its closest rivals. In the face of tough competition and fragmentation, STAR Plus has continued to win the attention of its viewers with fresh content and programming initiatives," Keertan said.
"STAR Plus continues to dominate the Indian television scene with one mega show after another. In the early 2000s, it was Kyunki, Kahaani, Kasauti and KBC, then it was the turn of afternoon shows like Kum Kum, Bhabhi and now shows like Bidaai, Kis Des Mein Hai Mera Dil, Raja ki Aayegi Baraat, Voice of India and Nach Baliye," he added.

'Paanchvi' outperforms rivals celebrity shows
From Biz Asia. Posted June 11 2008, 5.58pm
One can't miss the array of Bollywood celebrities descending on the small screen, since the craze started in 2000 with legend Amitabh Bachchan on 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'.
Last weekend saw Salman Khan debut as a TV host after numerous appearances as a special guest on other programmes. According to the overnight TV audience measurement system from Audience Measurement and Analytics (AMap), '10 Ka Dum' on Sony Entertainment Television Asia, had an average of 1.65% and a television rating (TRP) of 2.6% during peak time. As compared to KBC3, which unfurled on January 22, 2007, which had an average rating of 3.4% and a peak rating of 4.9%, 10 Ka Dum is way below.
'Junoon-Kuch Kar Dikhane Ka', which starred Hrithik Roshan as a celebrity judge being telecasted on NDTV Imagine, had an average rating of 0.82% and a peak rating of 1.1%.
ZEE TV's programme 'Rock And Roll Family', which has Ajay Devgan, Kajol and Tanuja as celebrity judges, and launched on 14th March, had an average TRP of 2.4% and a peak of 3.2%, according to AMap.

ZEE Next to launch in UK "within days"
From Biz Asia. Posted May 31 2008, 7.22pm
ZEE Network's second general Hindi entertainment channel, ZEE Next, is planning to launch on Sky Digital in the UK "within days".
Since last weekend, ZEE Network UK channels have been flashing a "Coming Soon" promo consisting of the ZEE Next channel ID. ZEE Next's strapline 'Dil Wahi, Dhadkan Nayi' meaning 'the heart is the same but a new heartbeat" will offer an alternative to the saas bahu soaps being offered on flagship channel ZEE TV.
When the channel launched in India, last December, ZEE Next business head Punit Goenka said, "While ZEE TV concentrates on stories inside the home, the new channel will narrate stories from outside. The channel will address more contemporary issues especially in its portrayal of women. Although its main target will be the youth demographic, it will not alienate the housewife."
With newcomers 9X and NDTV Imagine grabbing a majority of the market pie, ZEE Next has struggled to create the impact that bosses had wanted. Even though some programmes have received a good response, the channel has faced distribution problems.
Last month, a ZEE spokesman said that ZEE Next was to be revived with more hours dedicated to original programming and distribution problems rectified.
"There is a full-blown expansion plan for ZEE Next over the next two months. The focus will be on programming and distribution. The channel's peak investment requirement is Rs 3 billion on the channel. We will be spending more money on distribution and are also increasing original content on the channel," said a source in the company.
ZEE UK officials declined to comment further on the launch but did confirm ZEE Next will be launching "within days".
As always, keep it with BizAsia.co.uk for the exclusive announcement, first.
ZEE Network UK recently launched the group's first radio station, ZEE Radio, the UK's only all-Bollywood radio station, broadcasting on 558AM between 07:00 - 13:00 and on DAB digital radio 24 hours a day in Greater London.

'Meri Doli Tere Angna' to go off ZEE TV
From Biz Asia. Posted May 15 2008, 9.36pm
ZEE TV's daytime show 'Meri Doli Tere Angna', which launched with much fanfare last year as an alternative offering for housewives, is being pulled off the air.
According to TellyChakkar, the reason is the souring relation between the channel and the production house and the budget allocated informs our source.
Akhilesh, supervising director confirms the news and says, "It is true that the show is going off-air but there are no issues with the channel whatsoever. We have completed our agreement with the channel of 208 episodes. The last episode will air on Friday 16th May."
Rahul Bhatt , producer Filmtonic Entertainment, informs, "This was more of a creative decision. The show has been running for more than a year and I believe if we continue the show we would end up dragging the story. I am planning to come up with a new daily drama." Rahul however refutes all the rumours of ego clashes and issues regarding the budget allocation with ZEE.
In the UK, 'Meri Doli Tere Angna' comes to an end on Wednesday 4th June. (more)

Sterling Media's Teji Singh up for award
From Biz Asia. Posted May 10 2008, 1.11am
Teji Singh, media impresario and founder of international communications agency, Sterling Media, has been nominated for the Media Professional of the Year Award at the forthcoming Asian Women of Achievement Awards, taking place on Tuesday 20th May at London Hilton, Park Lane.
The Asian Women of Achievement Awards applaud and celebrate the commitment, dedication and determination of Asian women from all over the UK and from all walks of life.
Teji Singh is a name synonymous with determination, fortitude and the ability to succeed, even in the face of adversity. As an Asian single mother and media professional, she has challenged stereotypes surrounding the ‘role’ of Asian women in the workplace, as well as the home environment. Teji began her career in media when she was headhunted for the position of news anchor on the first Asian television channel in the UK, TV Asia. She embraced the opportunity and accompanying challenges, quickly rising in rank to one of TV Asia’s head news anchors. She stayed with the channel for four years, as a fundamental contributor to TV Asia’s growth from a modest channel into a global media brand that would shape and influence the Asian community for years to come – ZEE TV.
In commenting about her nomination, Teji Singh comments, "I am truly honoured and humbled to be recognised for my efforts in this way. It has been a challenging journey, on both a personal and professional level, to get to where I am today. There have been constant hurdles to overcome, barriers to break through, and boundaries to push forward.
"Through my own work, I want to demonstrate that you can achieve anything, if you really put your heart and soul into it. One should not worry about pleasing others, so long as you have faith, courage and integrity in your heart.
"As a single, Asian woman, trying to get ahead in a male-dominated professional environment, I have challenged the stereotypes, and want to be testament that anything can be achieved in this life. The only person that can stop you is yourself." (more)

From Biz Asia. Posted May 6 2008, 12.11am
ZEE Network's flagship current affairs channel ZEE News will be undergoing a transformation this week with a bundle of new graphics including an ident, studio set and tagline.
According to the station's new Consulting Editor, Punya Prasoon Bajpai, formerly a Channel Head of Sahara Samay, the revamped and new look channel would return to hardcore serious news with focus on reporters and reporting, heralding the comeback of channel's news properties. "Our weekly news shows 'Inside Story', an investigative programme and 'Special Correspondent', a hardcore programme on field reporting, would be back on the channel. So, would the daily prime time 'Metro News'," Rao added.
He further informed that ZEE News would add four new properties – a reporter-based weekly show; 'Halla Bol', a soft investigative programme on public issues; 'Kahiye Janab', a talk show featuring VIP, which would be hosted by Swati Chaturvedi. Bajpai would do a hard talk show, while a daily religious news and spiritual wellness programme, 'Manthan', is also being introduced.
A number of daily shows on the channel are being rebranded in line with the new channel positioning. The daily Bollywood show, 'Bole to Bollywood', will be renamed 'ZEE Multiplex' to give it a modern touch. The show 'Miyan Biwi aur TV' will now be called 'House Arrest - Serial ki Grifat Mein'. Astrology show 'Bachke Rehna' will have a new face in the form of Tarrot card reader Ruchira along with astrologer Sandeep Kochar.
"We are completely overhauling our sets along with improved graphics, headlines, fonts and effects, and using soft pastel colours to give a cool and confident look to the channel," Rao further said.
ZEE TV UK currently broadcasts three bulletins per day from ZEE News India - these will also result in changes on the same day as the revamp. ZEE Cinema UK's 'Bole To Bollywood' will change to 'ZEE Multiplex' too.
ZEE Network's other channels including ZEE TV, ZEE Cinema and ZEE Sports will also be revamping later this month. Keep it with BizAsia.co.uk for more. (more)

STAR Plus widens gap over ZEE TV in India
From Biz Asia. Posted April 13 2008, 3.12am
STAR Plus has consolidated its position as the nation's most watched channel, according to latest figures out this week.
The latest TAM ratings data (week ended 5th April) show STAR Plus at 361 GRPs, well ahead of ZEE TV, which is at 232 GRPs.
This is a huge gain by STAR Plus, particularly if you take into account the fact that in the week ended 16th February, ZEE TV had narrowed the gap to as little as 4 GRPS (STAR Plus 291, ZEE TV 287).
ZEE TV could not hold on to the momentum it had built up though and in the weeks that followed, STAR Plus steadily built up its lead. Even with the grand finale of 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li'l Champs' (on 1st March) fetching 6.73 TRPs, it was not enough for ZEE TV to bridge the widening gap.
Whilst ZEE TV's shows 'Dulhann', 'Betiyan' and 'Maayka' have been performing well, its new reality show 'Rock-n-Roll Family' has proved less popular than 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' in the same slot. Average ratings of around 4 TRPs has proved a dampener for ZEE TV.
In weeks to come, STAR Plus will be stregnthening its output further with the re-introduction of Smriti Irani in 'Kyunki' and the launch of Shah Rukh Khan's gameshow 'Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?'.
Sony TV back in Top 3!
After a shoddy start to the year, Sony Entertainment Television Asia is back in the wreckening by toppling NDTV Imagine from the number three slot in India.
In the week ended 5th April, Sony TV with 88 GRPs is just ahead of NDTV Imagine, which has pocketed 82 GRPs. On the back of reality shows, events (Filmfare awards) and a blockbuster film (Chak De India) Set managed to up its GRP to 110 in the week ended 1st March but in the subsequent week it slipped again.
Sony TV too is launching some big shows including the Salman Khan presented 'Power of 10' and the Indian Premier League cricket, which it is showing in India.
And the rest...
4. NDTV Imagine & 9X
5. Sahara One (70 GRPs)
6. STAR One (66 GRPs)
7. STAR Utsav (40 GRPs)
8. Sony SAB (32 GRPs)
9. ZEE Next (9 GRPs)

'Haadsa' to strengthen ZEE TV's weekends
From Biz Asia. Posted April 12 2008, 2.58pm
A new tri-weekly soap 'Haadsa' launches on ZEE TV next month to strengthen its Friday-Sunday output.
Details of the show at the time of filing this news piece were sketchy; however, we can reveal the show will take over the 21:30 slot, which means 'Naaginn' moves to 19:30 and 'Aladdin' moves to 19:00 at the weekends.
Punjabi family based light-humour show 'Chalti Da Naam Gaadi', which launched late last year is being phased out completely due to poor rating figures.
'Chalti Da Naam Gaadi' will be shown for the final time on Sunday 11th May. The other changes including the launch of 'Haadsa' takes place the following week on Friday 16th May.

'Ardhangini' axe makes way for 'Saath Saath'
From Biz Asia. Posted March 21 2008, 1.27pm
As reported previously, ZEE TV will be axing 'Ardhangini', which has not performed as the channel hoped it would have.
The latest twist is that the soap is being wound up quicker than intended because its lead actress has fallen ill. Industry buzz is that Sudeepa Singh who plays Kangana in the show is suffering from chicken pox and low blood-pressure.
When contacted Kinnari Mehta, producer of the show confirmed the news and said, "The show is indeed going off-air from today. Sudeepa is suffering from chicken pox and her condition is severe. We shot last week’s episodes without her. Since this is a love story it was impossible to shoot without her for two weeks’ episodes. We tried to shoot with her but she was unable due to her poor health."
Talking about the last episode, Kinnari informs, "The last episode will show Kangana dying and Priyam killing himself out of frustration. So there will be a sad end to this love story."
The show finished on ZEE TV India yesterday (Friday 20th March). 'Ardhangini' in the UK will come to a close on Friday 28th March. The following Monday (31st March) will see the launch of 'Saath Saath' in the 19:00 slot on ZEE TV UK. This is a change to the schedule as previously the show was slated to take the 18:00 slot due to a primetime slot being unavailable.

Pearl Shahi, ZEE's creative head confirms to TellyChakkar that the show is going off-air. She says, "Yes, the show is going off-air as it is not doing well. The show is not getting the expected TRPs. We will be introducing a new show as its replacement. We do not want to lose out on GRPs of our channel. We had given notice to the producer Sheel Kumar a month ago."
ZEE TV has recently witnessed a surge in ratings in India, which it doesn’t want jeopardised with any type of weak property. Earlier this month it was confirmed, ZEE TV will also be axing 'Ardhangini' due to its faltering ratings.

From Biz Asia. Posted February 25 2008, 8.52pm
Sahara One has confirmed it will air 'Mere Sasural' – a rebel soap to ZEE TV's 'Maayka - Sath Zindagi Bhar Ka'.
The story goes...Four months ago, ZEE TV's 'Maayka' production duties were shifted from Classic Productions and given to Dheeraj Kumar's Creative Eye. This subsequently saw the axe fall on 14 various actors including the loss of lead actress Urmila Kanitkar.
Creative head of the show Anjana Sood had vowed to her friends from the 'old' 'Maayka' that she would come up with a new show, which would star the old cast. That is where 'Mere Sasural' comes in.
When Mumbai Mirror contacted, Anjana Sood said, "I am thankful to the actors of Maayka for having confidence in me and having patience. During the last few months, none of them called me even once to ask about the new show that I had promised them. All of them were getting several offers from various channels including ZEE, but they turned them down and waited to hear from me. I will do my best and won't let them down."
'Mere Sasural' begins on Sahara One in India on Sunday (2nd March). A UK telecast is yet to be confirmed.

Main characters to die in 'Banoo Mein Teri Dulhann'
Shock, horror! The main protagonists of ZEE TV's flagship show 'Banoo Mein Teri Dulhann' will be killed off in weeks to come, according to Mumbai Mirror. Divyanka Tripathi aka Vidya and Sharad Malhotra aka Sagar are on the verge of breathing their last. However, sources have said that both are set to make a comeback in a reincarnation-type of story.
Juhi Parmar to stay on in STAR Plus' 'Kumkum'
Contrary to reports, the lead character of STAR Plus' 'Kumkum' - Juhi Parmar, is set to stay on in the soap after she came to an agreement with producers to halt any plans of a generation leap storyline. Juhi has been on the show since its inception; and recently when she refused to play a woman twice her age, a new track was introduced featuring her and Hussain making a comeback following reincarnation.
Rajesh Chaddha, Senior Vice President of BAG Films told Mumbai Mirror, "Juhi makes a transition from a 45-year-old to a 20-year-old. The idea of reincarnation where Juhi aka Kumkum and Hussain aka Sumit come back as a young couple worked for everybody. After all, the show is all about their love story." (more)
Uproar on ZEE TV show 'Lil' Champs' show
From Biz Asia. Posted February 17 2008, 11.11pm
There is outcry all over India, after a popular contestant on a talent show was eliminated.
10-year-old Aamir Hafiz, who was leading the pack of youngsters on 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs' last night, has been voted out of the show. His elder brother Firoz has blamed ZEE TV for indulging in unfair practices. He has stated that Aamir has been deliberately been eliminated because he belongs to a minority community.
He continued to say that ZEE do not want a member of the Muslim community to win the show.
Aamir’s brother and uncle then went onto cause chaos on the sets of the show, claiming that Aamir was a much better singer than the others.
ZEE TV executive vice-president Ashish Kaul expressed that anger and upset usually happens when people are eliminated.
Aamir has been a sensation, since he has been on the show, even managing to grab a playback deal with 'Om Shanti Om' composers Vishal-Shekhar for a track in 'Bhootnath'.

Music channel establishes lead position in India
From Biz Asia. Posted February 12 2008, 2.33pm
INX Media's satellite-delivered music channel 9XM claims it has an unprecedented leadership position in only three months since its launch in October 2007.
According to industry figures released for the key Indian youth demographic of 15-24 year-olds, the channel - which takes a fresh approach to presenting music - has achieved a more than two fold audience share lead over Viacom’s global youth music brand MTV, and an audience share in excess of seven times that of News Corporation’s STAR TV music platform Channel [V], both of which have been active in the sub-continent for over ten years.
"9XM has filled a void in the music television space. It has created a distinctive new space in music and entertainment that targets the needs and attitudes of youth, and not just the demographics," said Anthony Pettifer, Group Director, Brand and Communication, INX Media. "That’s why we’ve seen the channel being watched not only at home, but in canteens, colleges, bars, shopping malls, gyms, coffee bars and eateries. We’ve even seen it being played in streets outside McDonald's restaurants."

From Biz Asia. Posted January 19 2008, 9.57am
ZEE TV's 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - Little Champs' is gathering momentum as it comes to the final stages of the show, however there's good news already for two of its contestants.
Music directors Vishal and Shekhar, who have been a part of 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' previously were so taken aback by Tanmay and Aamir singing style that they signed them both up for the Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan movie 'Bhootnath'.

So could we see Amitabh Bachchan on 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' in the coming episodes? Watch this space.

Main protagonist quits ZEE TV's 'Kasamh Se'
From Biz Asia. Posted January 16 2008, 9.50pm
ZEE TV's 'Kasamh Se' could be in trouble after news emerged today that its lead actress Prachi Desai will be leaving the drama next month.
Reportedly, the actress’ professional life took a leap after she won the dance competition 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 2' and since then has had filmmakers queuing up to sign her.
She has also just completed the shooting of 'Rock On', her debut movie, alongside director turned actor Farhan Akhtar.
A source from Balaji Telefilms told Mumbai Mirror, "Prachi has been and will always be remembered as the Bani of Kasamh Se. She definitely is the face of the show and gave a big boost to Balaji’s already growing popularity. After winning JDJ 2, the actress immediately got the offer for a film with Farhan Akhtar. However, the film’s contract stipulates that she cannot be seen on small screen during the promotion of the movie. Understandably, she won’t have the time to shoot for Kasamh Se once she starts shooting for Rock On in February."
'Pia' played by Roshni Chopra quit the same show last month.
Ekta said, "Prachi will shoot her last episode with us by the end of January. It was a tough decision, but it’s okay. Iqbal Khan left Karam Apna Apna, Smriti Irani left Kyunki... but we went on without any hiccups," added Ekta.

ZEE TV develops presence in China market
From Biz Asia. Posted January 16 2008, 7.38am
Zee Entertainment is looking to become the first Indian television company to develop a presence in China, according to Subhash Chandra, Chairman of ZEE Entertainment Enterprises.
In an interview to The Hindu, Mr. Chandra revealed that ZEE has applied for TV landing rights in the Chinese mainland which would allow it to be part of the bouquet of channels offered by satellite operators.
Although ZEE applied for landing rights permission more than a year ago, in September 2006, Beijing has yet to give its approval. However, Mr. Chandra is hopeful that a breakthrough might be announced during Manmohan Singh’s visit.
Only ten days ago New Delhi allowed China Central Television’s English channel, CCTV-9, landing rights in India. Mr. Chandra thus believes a reciprocal gesture is imminent.
If given approval, Zee will offer a 24-hour, tailor-made product for the Chinese market.
Several ZEE entertainment soap operas dubbed in Mandarin have already been syndicated on Chinese television over the last two years and have proved to be hits. Chinese and Indian audiences share a love of family-based dramas that deal with inter-personal intrigue, Mr. Chandra said.

Smriti Irani planning family show for ZEE TV
From Biz Asia. Posted January 14 2008, 10.39pm
Actor-producer Smriti Irani is working on a family drama to be shown on ZEE TV, according to Telly Chakkar.
The production house and the channel at present are busy with the casting of the actors for the show. Smriti has so far had shows on STAR Plus - 'Thodi Si Zameen Thoda sa Aasmaan' and on Sony Entertainment Television Asia - 'Virrudh', both of which have gone off air.
When contacted, Smriti as usual chose to remain quiet on the issue. Smriti said, "Honestly, I can't reveal anything as of now. We are coming up with a family drama on ZEE for sure. I make it a point to never talk on my behalf. I always let the channel do the talking. So I think the best person to talk to would be somebody from the channel."
Tarun Mehra, Business Head of ZEE Telefilms Ltd., also did not seem to be in a mood to reveal anything about the show. He said, "I am not in a position to reveal anything about the show. We will let you know once everything is decided and when the time is right."
Smriti is also in the process of putting the final touches to her comedy show 'Bai Bole Toh Gangu Bai', which too will be shown on ZEE TV.

ZEE Muzic unveils new on-air packaging
From Biz Asia. Posted December 25 2007, 11.39pm
ZEE Muzic has freshened up its on-air look with a set of new graphics including the introduction of a glossy blue animating logo.
ZEE Muzic's promotional activities thus far have centered around the colour red with a significant 'Z' to coincide with the network's other channel logos. The new logo is different to the four other ZEE Network UK channels - ZEE TV, ZEE Cinema, ZEE Gujarati and Alpha ETC Punjabi, as it dons a rectangle shape rather than the diamond used previously.
The light blue tone is no doubt a strategy being used to revamp and reposition the channel with a focus on celebrity-based music shows. In India, ZEE Muzic has been performing well with spin-off 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' shows, which are screened directly after the main show on sister channel ZEE TV.
ZEE Muzic is also expected to announce a slew of new programmes in the coming weeks to run on par with the channel's new image. In the UK, ZEE Muzic and rival channel B4U Music were joined with a new addition called Music India, which is being distributed by MATV.

9X & Bindaas begin eating into popular channels
From Biz Asia. Posted December 24 2007, 12.06pm
Newcomers into the Indian TV market - 9X and Bindass have begun eating to the shares of long-running channels like Sony Entertainment Television Asia, Sahara One, MTV and Channel V, according to latest data.
Business Standard is reporting that while 9X, within a month of its launch, has managed to penetrate nearly 30 per cent of the 76 million cable homes, Bindass, the youth channel from UTV, is generating higher ratings than MTV and Channel V, the two established youth-centric television channels.
According to online rating generated by Audience Measurement and Analytics Ltd for the 10th December (Monday)-16th December (Sunday) period for the prime-time television (8pm-11pm), 9X is generating comparatively similar ratings at various time bands as Sony TV, the general entertainment channel (GEC) running for nearly a decade.
Similarly, UTV’s Bindass has managed to outdo MTV and Channel V on several of the weekdays at prime time shows. For example, on 14th December (Friday) between 9pm-10pm, Bindass generated a rating of 0.21, which is 10 times the ratings generated by Channel V and MTV.
In the GEC space, 9X generated a rating of 0.41 in the 8:30pm-9pm slot, similar to Sony TV on December 15 (Saturday).
Analysts feel that this is because of a high cable household penetration achieved by 9X within a month of its launch coupled with interesting shows like 'Missing Ustaad' and others.
In the long-term, these new channels (including ZEE Next launched on 17th December) may eat into the ad revenue of the big three GECs — STAR Plus, ZEE TV and Sony TV, says an industry source.
The higher ratings of these newly launched channels will have an adverse impact on channels like Sahara One, STAR Utsav and SAB TV among others in the short run.
Among the big three GECs, Sony TV has been at the third place for a long time both in terms of ratings and channel share, with STAR Plus being the numero uno followed closely by ZEE TV.
Both STAR Plus and ZEE TV generate average television ratings of 3.9-5 during weekdays in the prime time viewing band. While Star Plus on most occasions gets the highest viewership ratings, ZEE TV has started displacing STAR Plus shows on several occasions, says the source.

Prachi Desai wins 'Jhalak Dikhla Ja' on Sony TV
From Biz Asia. Posted December 16 2007, 5.18pm
ZEE TV's 'Kasamh Se' actress Prachi Desai has won the latest run of 'Jhalak Dikhla Ja'.
Prachi and her choreographer Deepak won the trophy and prize money of Rs. five million after a tough contest, beating finalists Sandhya Mridul and Jay Bhanushali, in the grand finale.
Although the three judges gave their votes to Sandhya, the public declared Prachi, the youngest participant, as the winner.
Wearing a red tunic with silver leggings, Prachi was looking like an excited school kid. However, she controlled her excitement while the others were busy consoling Sandhya.
Prachi, seen as the sari-clad bahu of Kkasam Se, surprised the entire nation with her dancing skills and became the favourite of the judges too.
A twist in the tale came when the public voted her out and she was eliminated from the show earlier on despite being the best performer. However, she re-entered with the help of a wild card. (more)

Smriti Irani producing comedy for ZEE TV
From Biz Asia. Posted December 8 2007, 10.29am
Smriti Irani is surely branching out. After moving away from STAR's 'Kyunki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi', the actress-producer has been busy with work on other channels including Sony Entertainment Television Asia, 9X and NDTV Imagine.
Moreover, earlier this week, Smriti revealed that she was to make her debut in ZEE TV's popular soap 'Teen Bahuraniyaan'. Now, sources at Mumbai Mirror have reported that Smriti is set to make her first comedy show for the number two channel.
The programme has been tentatively titled 'Bai Bole Toh Gangubai'. It will revolve around Gangubai’s life and how she tries to solve the problems of various families living in the society. The half hour weekend primetime show is likely to go on air in December-end (in India) and the shooting will begin in the next two weeks.
Says a source, "The show will revolve around the life of a maid and how she plays an important role in our day to day lives; how she solves small problems of the various families in the society and how, her absence affects our daily lives. The show has largely been inspired by Bawarchi and Hero No 1. It will have different flavors of emotions that make people laugh and cry. It is a very relatable family-oriented story. Gangubai will be a typical Maharashtrian wearing nauvari sari in the show."

ZEE Next to launch in December in India
From Biz Asia. Posted November 29 2007, 9.11pm
ZEE TV's sibling general Hindi entertainment station ZEE Next is likely to launch in India on Monday 17th December, according to reports.
ZEE Next is being targeted to a much younger audience compared to the flagship channel ZEE TV. It will have mixed programmes that include thriller, comedy, reality and action among others.
Online portal IndianTelevision has reported that the channel's brand tagline will be "Manoranjan Ka Agla Andaaz. The brand philosophy for the channel is Dil Wahi, Dhadkan Nayi.
ZEE Next business head Punit Goenka said, "ZEE Next is a family viewing channel meant largely for the younger audiences with a very traditional outlook. Slated to be launched by the end of the year, we have ensured that we carry forward the heritage and philosophy of ZEE Network on to this new offering. The channel will live up to its value of Dil Wahi Dhadkan Nayi and have something for all the members of the family, from the children to the grandparents."
"While ZEE TV concentrates on stories inside the home, the new channel will narrate stories from outside. The channel will address more contemporary issues especially in its portrayal of women. Although its main target will be the youth demographic, it will not alienate the housewife," Goenka had said.
ZEE Next is expected to launch in the UK sometime in 2008.

New channel 9X opens to a mixed response
From Biz Asia. Posted November 26 2007, 8.37am
INX Media's new Hindi general entertainment channel 9X, which launched earlier this month has opened up to a bag of mixed numbers.
Data for its launch week shows that the channel already has a 20 per cent reach, but in terms of channel share, it has opened lower compared to the likes of SAB and STAR Utsav. TAM Media Research data shows that for the C&S 4+ in the Hindi speaking markets, both in the all day data for the entire week, and the for weekdays primetime data, the channel has got better numbers only to the UTV owned Bindass.
At an all day level for the entire week, 9X has a share of 0.63. In comparison, STAR Utsav is 0.86, SAB is 0.9, STAR One is 1.64, Sahara One is 2, Sony is 2.8, ZEE TV is 7.93 and STAR Plus is 10.09. The recently launched youth channel Bindass has a share of 0.49. If only the weekday primetime is seen, 9X has a share of 0.48, while STAR Utsav has 0.56, SAB has 0.88, Sony is 1.81, STAR One is 1.95, Sahara One is 2.42, ZEE TV is 13.57 and STAR Plus is 15.77.
INX Media officials are "delighted" with the numbers and are touting it to be the “best opening numbers for a C&S channel in the history of Indian television”. Indrani Mukerjea, CEO, INX Media, said, "Things are going as per our plans – from the day we started, the reach numbers have gone up each day – right from November 12 to the close of the week, and will continue to do so."
Karthik Laxminarayan, COO, Madison Media Infinity, voices the section of the industry that is happy with these numbers. He said, "They are very close to the second tier numbers in the first week itself and hence, these are very promising numbers. They have created enough buzz for people to tune in to the channel, and from here it is really up to the content of the channel."
Prasanth Kumar, National Director, CTG, GroupM, on the other hand, is of the opinion that these are not encouraging numbers. He said, "9X is one of the channels that had launched with a high decibel impact plan. The programming line also had a good cast. However, the numbers haven’t given it an impact-at-launch. It shows that the channel certainly didn’t come as a surprise to viewers or clients and agencies."
At a programme level, of the three shows in the primetime slot of 9X – 'Kahe Na Kahe', 'Jiya Jale' and 'Mere Apne' – 'Mere Apne' has delivered the highest with an average rating of 0.2. Siddharth Basu’s first shot at fiction – 'Jiya Jale' – has had an average rating of 0.14, while Ekta Kapoor’s 'Kahe na Kahe' is at an average rating of 0.11. The channel’s comedy band that has a different show on each day of the week at 22:30 has ratings varying from 0.09 to 0.15.
Mukerjea is clear that the channel is not in any hurry to make any changes based on just a week’s data. She said, "We are confident that each of our shows is a unique property, and we don’t have knee jerk reactions to such early numbers."
9X's sister channel 9XM continues its run as market leader in the music sector after only three weeks on air. 9XM is also planning a UK launch next year.

ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has announced an in-house re-organisation in order to harness talents from within and offer them wider responsibilities. Punit Goenka, who was Business Head at ZEE TV, will now be Network Operating Officer, ZEEL.
Tarun Mehra has been announced as Business Head of ZEE TV. Other appointments are that of Mohan Gopinath as Business Head of ZEE Cinema, Irshwin Balwani as Business Head of Play TV, and Ajay Balwankar as Business Head of ZEE Marathi.
Goenka said, "This re-organisation is a result of our learning from an in-depth internal communications exercise, during which I met most of the managers within the Network, to assess the width of in-house talent. It was truly satisfying to reaffirm that we have an extremely talented pool of people. I believe by enriching their portfolios, they will lead ZEE Network with greater vigour and effect. I wish them all the best in their respective new roles."
Mehra was earlier Marketing Head at ZEE TV. He had joined ZEE Network in January 2005 as Vice-president-Marketing of ZEE TV. Gopinath had joined ZEE Network in 1996 as a Management Trainee.
Balwani will assume duties of Play TV, in addition to his present portfolio of Business Head of ZEE Muzic and ETC Network. He joined ZEE Network in September 2005. Prior to ZEE, he was with 'The Times of India' for 13 years. Bhalwankar started his career with film journalism and joined ZEE Network in 1994 as Assistant Director.
