Sony TV India sells 32% stake to MCorp?
From Biz Asia. Posted May 13 2008, 9.46pm
Industry reports have suggested that Sony Entertainment Television Asia in India (Multi Screen Media) is close to selling a 32% stake to Indian businessman Bhupendra Kumar Modi's MCorp. Global for $320 million. Online portal Exchange4Media, reported that MCorp. Global - whose interests include Spice Telecom and planned forays in entertainment - has bought out the 32% stake in MSM held by five SET India founding promoters including Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff and Mumbai-based home video company Shemaroo Entertainment MD Raman Maroo who were looking to offload their shareholding timed with a probable IPO by SET. While SET has still not gone public, observers feel that MCorp's buyout could be the exit route the promoters were looking for. Reportedly, following MCorp's acquisition, SET India's shareholding would now see parent Sony Corp. continue to own 60% along with U.S.-based Capital International owning 8%, with the balance 32% owned by MCorp. Global. Sony Entertainment Television Asia refused to comment. Related link: SET India rebranded Multi Screen Media (more)

ZEEL Q1 results show impressive figures
From Biz Asia. Posted July 18 2007, 9.13am
ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has reported its first quarter consolidated revenues of Rs 3,916 million, representing a 35 per cent growth over the corresponding period in the previous fiscal. The consolidated operating profit stood at Rs 1,197 million. These are higher by 81 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter last fiscal. Operating profit margin rose by 30.6 per cent from 23 per cent, as compared to the corresponding quarter last fiscal. Profit before tax for the first quarter of fiscal 2007 was Rs 1,225 million, while net profit was Rs 813 million, recording a growth of 51 per cent over the corresponding period last year. The company registered advertisement revenue of Rs 2,044 million for the first quarter ended June 30, 2007, an increase of 47 per cent as compared to the corresponding period last fiscal. The average channel share of the flagship channel increased to 25 per cent within the general entertainment genre, which increased by 10 per cent from the previous quarter. Subhash Chandra, Chairman, ZEEL, said, "We are pleased that operating margins have improved to 30.6 per cent, compared to the 23 per cent in the first quarter last fiscal. Most of us are aware of the exciting opportunities ahead of us in the television content business. We are making the right investments in capturing a larger mind share of the viewers, both nationally and globally. With rapid transformation in the Indian media scenario through digitisation, the coming years hold a lot of promise and we are confident of delivering long term shareholder value." Punit Goenka, Director, ZEEL, said, "We continued to gain market share in the general entertainment genre. ZEE TV has maintained its ratings across time bands and has averaged 234 gross rating points during the quarter, and an average channel share of 25 per cent within the general entertainment category, up from 23 per cent during the previous quarter.” He further stated that during the quarter, ZEE TV had come closest ever to the genre leader in the last seven years. Goenka explained that STAR Plus’ 'KBC-3', which went off-air in mid-April, helped both 'Kasamh Se' and 'Saat Phere' to regain their respective leadership positions. 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007' continues to be the leader despite many shows based on a similar theme. Elaborating on the performance, Pradeep Guha, CEO, ZEEL, said, "Our team has done well, both in gaining viewership share and in monetising that effectively. We are pleased with the good start to the fiscal year. On the international business front, we continued to do well, though rising strength of rupee has impacted our revenues." Guha further said that in terms of sports, his company had got out of the cricket contract, and that it is looking forward to build franchise in football. He said that the channel would showcase cricket from the Indian Cricket League. The sports genre for the flagship company saw Ten Sports as a clear winner as it registered a 51 per cent viewership share. ZEE Sports and Ten Sports will now look forward to a strong second quarter with a variety of joint ventures. They will increase their joint impact on the market, particularly in August, as both channels will share a new line-up of football rights, including deals with various football clubs. Disney and Yash Raj Films ink animation deal
From Biz Asia. Posted June 13 2007, 8.59am
In an attempt to create a series of exclusive computer animated feature films, Yash Raj Films (YRF) Studios and Walt Disney have teamed up together to produce a series of exclusive computer animated feature films. It is for the first time that Yash Chopra, Chairman, Yash Raj Films and Dick Cook, Chairman, Walt Disney Studios are coming together for a venture. On the eve of this occasion, Yash Chopra, Chairman, YRF, said, "Yash Raj Films and Yash Raj Films Studios have been at the forefront in live-action feature films for almost four decades. Together with my son Aditya, we have created our own space with the efforts of a wonderful team - both creative and business - and have had the opportunity of producing films that we believe in; films that entertain a large population, as well as the Indian diaspora." Chopra believes that the tie-up is not just the coming together of two organisations, but it is also the teaming up of two individuals with similar culture and traditions. Dick Cook, Chairman, Walt Disney Studios, said, "We are thrilled and honoured to be working with Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra and their talented teams at YRF Studios in the Indian language that are culturally relevant for the avid movie-going audiences in India and around the world." Cook added that animation is a new and rapidly expanding area in India, and this collaboration will bring the very best in story-telling and cutting edge technology together. Both companies will be equal partners in the venture and will contribute creative, technical and financial support to the project. Aditya Chopra would be the creative head of the alliance. ‘Roadside Romeo’, a film set to release in 2008, will be the first film to be co-produced by this alliance. It will be produced by Aditya Chopra, and written and directed by Jugal Hansraj. Article from Exchange4Media Related link: Yash Raj Films to launch TV channel (more)

ZEE poaches STAR exec. for new channel
From Biz Asia. Posted February 5 2007, 9.21am
ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has begun making appointments for its forthcoming general entertainment channel – ZEE Next. Even as channel officials refused to divulge much yet, it is reliably learnt that a recent appointment made in ZEE Next's sales division is that of Anurag Bedi, who was hitherto looking after the South and West operations of STAR Plus and STAR One. Bedi has been roped in as Deputy Vice-President, Sales. At ZEE he comes in to head ZEE Music and ETC music channels. However, he is expected to move to the soon-to-be-launched general entertainment channel from ZEE. Joy Chakraborthy, EVP, Sales, ZEEL has confirmed Bedi's appointment. He said, "Anurag will prove to be a great asset to the organisation. I have worked with him earlier and am looking forward to the value addition that he would make to the ZEEL ad sales function." While Chakraborty said that Bedi had come in for the music channels, he didn't offer any comments on whether or not Bedi would be taking charge of ZEE Next. TAM data shows "encouraging start" for KBC 3
From Biz Asia. Posted February 2 2007, 8.56am
After two weeks of being on air, the results by audience measuring body (India)-TAM are out and has shown a decent start to the Shah Rukh Khan hosted 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'. It must be noted that a direct comparison to the numbers last year would not be correct as TAM has expanded markets beginning January 2007. Looking at numbers now, the 21:00 - 22:00 day-part from Monday to Thursday has grown for Hindi general entertainment channels (GEC). From a share of 45 per cent in week 3 (one week prior to KBC launch), the share in week 4 was 57.95 per cent. In the three Hindi metros, the number has grown from 32.11 per cent to 48.41 per cent. For STAR Plus, the relative share of the channel was 37.7 in week 3 for HSM and this has increased to 60 per cent in the KBC week. In the three metros, the jump is from 33.7 per cent to 62.7 per cent. In the HSM, KBC-SRK opened at a TRP of 12.33 on 22nd January 2007. It came down to 10.44 on the second day and further down to 7.36 in episode three, but the final episode of the week picked up again to throw up a TRP of 9.24. Looking at the Hindi metros now, the opening TRP was 11.26, which moved to 9.1, 6.03 and then to 7.65 on the final day of the week. However, KBC has done some good to STAR Plus. The week it aired KBC saw an increase in its relative channel share to 55.9 per cent, from 37.7 per cent in the previous week among general entertainment channels. This was mainly at the cost of ZEE’s viewership, which in Week 3 of 2007 was at par with STAR Plus, with a channel share of 37.6 per cent, but could only manage a 21.5 per cent share in Week 4, 2007.
