ZEE TV to launch three new soaps to rival
From Biz Asia. Posted September 30 2008, 1.33am
ZEE TV has announced the launch of three new soaps, which it will use to combat the stiff competition it faces from fresh new rival Colors and the current market leader STAR Plus.
According to IndianTelevision, 'Choti Bahu', 'Maa' and 'Rang' are the three fiction-based shows that will make their appearance on the channel soon.
Produced by DJ Creations, 'Choti Bahu' will go on air by November. 'Maa' is produced by Shakuntalam Telefilms. Television actor Rohit Roy and Mansi Roy's production house will produce 'Rang'.
Earlier, ZEE TV said that it preferred to take on Colors with fiction shows rather than expensive reality TV properties like 'Bigg Boss' and 'Fear Factor'. Sources say the management is more worried with Colors' growth in ratings from fiction shows like 'Balika Vadhu' and 'Jai Shri Krishna'.

Colors opens up with encouraging figures
From Biz Asia. Posted August 2 2008, 2.16am
The newly launched channel Colors from Viacom 18 Media has opened up to a positive response across India.
Data issued to BizAsia.co.uk for the week ending 26th July saw Colors start with 81 gross rating points (GRPs).
Compared to other recently launched Indian TV channels, Colors has had a spectacular launch. Earlier this year, NDTV Imagine garnered 55 GRPs in its first week of launch (20-26 January). 9X, on the other hand, recorded a GRP of 21, but later climbed the ratings ladder. ZEE Next crawled with a 6 GRP in its opening week.
Colors lags behind market leader STAR Plus, ZEE TV, Sony TV, NDTV Imagine, 9X and STAR One. Colors clarifies that the 81 GRPs have come from five-and-half days of programming while the other channels have captured the ratings for seven days. Observers also say the second week ratings will indicate the actual positioning of the channel.
The GEC market seems to have expanded with the new launches. "Clearly, the market has grown. After the first week of sampling, now the effort is to hold up the stake. The important thing here is that our ratings are not driven by a single show but by three different programmes," says Kamat.
Colors' big ticket reality show 'Fear Factor-Khatron Ke Khiladi' has opened with 1.7 (on 21st July) TVR, which went to a high of 2.27 on 24th July. 'Balika Vadhu' managed a high TVR of 1.26 and mythological 'Jai Sri Krishna' notched a maximum of 0.92 TVR on 21st July.
Colors will launch the second season of 'Bigg Boss' after completion of 16-episodes of its driver show 'Fear Factor'. The channel has already endorsed original format (Big Brother) winner Shilpa Shetty for the show.
Whilst there are plans to launch Colors in the UK, there is no concrete information on this. TV Eighteen's previous channel CNN IBN was available in the South Asia World avatar before ending after its distribution agreement ended with ZEE Network UK.

STAR Plus commands 11% India market share
From Biz Asia. Posted July 31 2008, 12.04am
STAR Plus, India's leading Hindi entertainment channel has racked up 11% of the market share. This is the largest portion in this space, bigger than ZEE TV and Sony Entertainment Television Asia put together.
A report in Economic Times indicates soaps are still the main drivers and STAR Plus has overcome viewer fatigue with innovative content and fresh story lines.
Speaking to PTI here today, Keertan Adhyantaya, Executive Vice-President and General Manager, highlighted the latest Television Audience Measurement (TAM) data and said the channel has remained undisputed leader in the Hindi general entertainment channel space for the last nine years.
"Audience ratings in the first half of 2008 clearly demonstrates that STAR Plus has retained a lead over its closest rivals. In the face of tough competition and fragmentation, STAR Plus has continued to win the attention of its viewers with fresh content and programming initiatives," Keertan said.
"STAR Plus continues to dominate the Indian television scene with one mega show after another. In the early 2000s, it was Kyunki, Kahaani, Kasauti and KBC, then it was the turn of afternoon shows like Kum Kum, Bhabhi and now shows like Bidaai, Kis Des Mein Hai Mera Dil, Raja ki Aayegi Baraat, Voice of India and Nach Baliye," he added.

ZEE set to revitalise Indian Cricket League
From Biz Asia. Posted May 21 2008, 10.02pm
In order to counter the heat generated by the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) launched by BCCI, the rebel cricket body — Indian Cricket League (ICL) — is all set to take its tournament outside the country.
Not only will the Subhash Chandra-owned Twenty20 tournament go to West Asia in September, its prize money will also go up. ICL will also launch a high-voltage multi-media campaign beginning August-September other than considering roping in film stars to not only own cricket teams, but to play the Twenty20 matches.
The bottom line is that the Essel Group is gearing up to take on the Indian Premier League which has kept television viewers glued to Sony's SET Max channel.
Says a senior ZEE executive: "The ICL is now very big on the agenda for the group. Several steps are being taken to increase the interest of both the viewers and the advertisers when the tournament starts in September-October this year. Don't forget, we saw the big potential in the Twenty20 format much before anyone else did."
To lend freshness to the game, the ICL executives are looking at several international cricketing venues in the Gulf. The belief is that the company may finally zero in on Dubai or Sharjah as Taj Television, the holding company of Ten Sports that shows the matches, is based in Dubai. ZEE owns a 50 per cent stake in Ten Sports.
However, in the face of competition from IPL, establishing ICL as a vibrant television property will be an uphill task for the Essel Group.
"IPL is a successful television property with consistent ratings of about 4-5, similar to any popular show on a general entertainment channel. The initial tournaments of ICL got ratings of 1-2. To attract the viewers to another Twenty20 tournament will be a tough challenge for the ICL team," says a senior media planner. Winning against IPL will be a challenge on other counts as well.
For a start, IPL is an official tournament with the backing of the International Cricket Council (ICC) while ICL is a rebel league comprising either retired international cricketers or not so known cricket players from both within and outside the country.
Also, the ICL matches aired on ZEE Sports and later on Ten Sports as well, managed to attract viewers for 6-12 minutes on an average. The average time spent on Set Max (for IPL) has been over 40 minutes.
Himanshu Modi, business head, ICL, however, is unfazed. In an emailed response to Business Standard earlier, he said: "It is important for everyone involved or following the league to understand that in terms of product life cycle we are in the introductory stage. Like any other sporting product, the ICL will need time to build its support base…"
IPL has become a phenomenal television success, agree advertising experts. "If any one has to even match its intensity in future, they will have to put in something 'extra'," a senior executive in an advertising agency concludes.
International venues and celebrities may work wonders for the sub-continent expats, but for the viewers back home, much more may be required," a senior executive in a Gurgaon-based advertising agency concludes.

STAR Plus widens gap over ZEE TV in India
From Biz Asia. Posted April 13 2008, 3.12am
STAR Plus has consolidated its position as the nation's most watched channel, according to latest figures out this week.
The latest TAM ratings data (week ended 5th April) show STAR Plus at 361 GRPs, well ahead of ZEE TV, which is at 232 GRPs.
This is a huge gain by STAR Plus, particularly if you take into account the fact that in the week ended 16th February, ZEE TV had narrowed the gap to as little as 4 GRPS (STAR Plus 291, ZEE TV 287).
ZEE TV could not hold on to the momentum it had built up though and in the weeks that followed, STAR Plus steadily built up its lead. Even with the grand finale of 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li'l Champs' (on 1st March) fetching 6.73 TRPs, it was not enough for ZEE TV to bridge the widening gap.
Whilst ZEE TV's shows 'Dulhann', 'Betiyan' and 'Maayka' have been performing well, its new reality show 'Rock-n-Roll Family' has proved less popular than 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' in the same slot. Average ratings of around 4 TRPs has proved a dampener for ZEE TV.
In weeks to come, STAR Plus will be stregnthening its output further with the re-introduction of Smriti Irani in 'Kyunki' and the launch of Shah Rukh Khan's gameshow 'Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?'.
Sony TV back in Top 3!
After a shoddy start to the year, Sony Entertainment Television Asia is back in the wreckening by toppling NDTV Imagine from the number three slot in India.
In the week ended 5th April, Sony TV with 88 GRPs is just ahead of NDTV Imagine, which has pocketed 82 GRPs. On the back of reality shows, events (Filmfare awards) and a blockbuster film (Chak De India) Set managed to up its GRP to 110 in the week ended 1st March but in the subsequent week it slipped again.
Sony TV too is launching some big shows including the Salman Khan presented 'Power of 10' and the Indian Premier League cricket, which it is showing in India.
And the rest...
4. NDTV Imagine & 9X
5. Sahara One (70 GRPs)
6. STAR One (66 GRPs)
7. STAR Utsav (40 GRPs)
8. Sony SAB (32 GRPs)
9. ZEE Next (9 GRPs)

Now..Akshay Kumar to present on TV too
From Biz Asia. Posted April 5 2008, 12.42pm
Akshay Kumar has joined his industry friends Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan by becoming the latest star to host a TV show.
It looks like the Punjabi actor has been lured into a record deal for a show along the lines of 'Fear Factor'.
According to a source at Times Of India, "Akshay will be paid Rs 1.5 crore per episode, which is more than what SRK is getting for Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain?" Incidentally Sallu has been booked for Rs 89 crore for 104 episodes. So far, we’ve been hearing about his big film deals, now there’s confirmation that he may yet overtake the Khan in price.
The new series of the programme will air on the soon-to-launch Hindi entertainment channel from Viacom 18. Incidentally Akshay Kumar stars in Studio 18's upcoming mega release 'Singh is Kinng', which opens up at cinemas in August.
The first season was aired on Sony Entertainment Television Asia. It was shot in the exotic locales of Kuala Lampur and Malaysia and hosted by Mukul Dev.

Confirmed: Salman to front show for Sony TV
From Biz Asia. Posted April 5 2008, 12.28pm
As we revealed last week, it has now been confirmed by Sony Entertainment Television Asia that Bollywood hunk Salman Khan will be fronting a gameshow for the channel from June.
The desi version of 'Power of 10' is being produced by Synergy Adlabs. Sony TV will use the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the lead in for the show.
According to Sony TV business head Albert Almeida, the show is more inclusive and audience participatory compared to other gameshows.
Almeida adds that participants will need to have an educated stance and a decisive point of view to succeed. "If an issue affects him/her, then it is likely that the participant will answer as per the feelings. If the question pertains to an issue that is far from the individual's issue, then the participant will have to think about it."
A participant can choose to exit the show at any point of time. If the participant however carries on and answers incorectly, then the amount won is lost. In the beginning two participants face off for the right to play the game.
In the US the show airs on CBS and is hosted by Drew Carey.
On rival channel STAR Plus India, it has begun marketing activities for its own upcoming mega gameshow 'Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain?' hosted by King Khan - Shah Rukh.

STAR Plus to launch another new gameshow
From Biz Asia. Posted March 29 2008, 11.46am
STAR Plus is launching another new gameshow to fill after the series end of 'STAR Voice Of India - Chotte Ustaad'.
The Endemol produced show called 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Super Star' is being launched as a result of STAR Plus' huge property 'Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain?' presented by Shah Rukh Khan being delayed to avoid a clash with the Indian Premier League matches, which would have begun at the same time.
'Jo Jeeta Wohi Super Star' will be judged by the famous music director duo Vishal and Shekhar and director Farah Khan. "It’s a good feeling to perform on such a big platform and in front of Vishal Shekhar and Farahji. This brings back memories of Indian Idol," he says.
The programme will see rivalry between contestants from the three big reality TV shows - 'Indian Idol', 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' and 'STAR Voice of India'.
The participants include Ishmit, Himani and Vineet from ZEE, Rahul Vaidya from Indian Idol. We wonder what made Abhijeet take up this venture when he has a Bollywood career to look forward to? "I took up this show as the concept was really good. STAR and Endemol is trying out something new. Besides that I also have the opportunity to promote my upcoming film Lottery," he laughs.
The show is also expected to launch in the UK, however a date is yet to be confirmed. (more)

Siddharth Basu of Synergy Communications, which is producing ‘Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?’, has still not given out the date of telecast. When asked about it, he had recently said, the time and date of telecast of the show will be announced shortly.
The Economic Times source adds, Although many people consider him rude and eccentric, Salman has often revealed the compassionate side of his personality without making a song and dance about it.

The actress with the 1,000 watt smile will duet with celebrity judge choreographer Vaibhav Merchant to entice viewers to dance along to her smash hit song Aaja Nachle. Madhuri is sure to mesmerise with her electrifying jhatkas in what promises to be the most spectacular show in the series so far.
High-energy dance spectacle, Nach Baliye, captures the drama and emotional journey of 10 celebrity couples from the small and silver screen through a high powered dance-off competition, where they compete to impress three A-list celebrity judges - the sensational actress Isha Koppikar, ace director David Dhawan and promising choreographer Vaibhav Merchant – with their Bollywood jhatkas. This year, the show also features special performances and appearances by Bollywood’s glitterati, such as this weekend’s appearance by Madhuri Dixit.

Catch Rakhi Sawant and her baliye perform their very own rendition of Madhuri’s hit 80’s song Ek, Do, Teen.

Main characters to die in 'Banoo Mein Teri Dulhann'
Shock, horror! The main protagonists of ZEE TV's flagship show 'Banoo Mein Teri Dulhann' will be killed off in weeks to come, according to Mumbai Mirror. Divyanka Tripathi aka Vidya and Sharad Malhotra aka Sagar are on the verge of breathing their last. However, sources have said that both are set to make a comeback in a reincarnation-type of story.
Juhi Parmar to stay on in STAR Plus' 'Kumkum'
Contrary to reports, the lead character of STAR Plus' 'Kumkum' - Juhi Parmar, is set to stay on in the soap after she came to an agreement with producers to halt any plans of a generation leap storyline. Juhi has been on the show since its inception; and recently when she refused to play a woman twice her age, a new track was introduced featuring her and Hussain making a comeback following reincarnation.
Rajesh Chaddha, Senior Vice President of BAG Films told Mumbai Mirror, "Juhi makes a transition from a 45-year-old to a 20-year-old. The idea of reincarnation where Juhi aka Kumkum and Hussain aka Sumit come back as a young couple worked for everybody. After all, the show is all about their love story." (more)

Bulldog Media & Entertainment has licenced the international format from Mark Burnett Productions, Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?, to STAR Plus and STAR Vijay.

Commenting on his involvement in this project, Khan said: "I have been trying to work for children for some time now and I’m glad I got this opportunity. I am doing this for my children and all the children in the country."

Smriti Irani planning family show for ZEE TV
From Biz Asia. Posted January 14 2008, 10.39pm
Actor-producer Smriti Irani is working on a family drama to be shown on ZEE TV, according to Telly Chakkar.
The production house and the channel at present are busy with the casting of the actors for the show. Smriti has so far had shows on STAR Plus - 'Thodi Si Zameen Thoda sa Aasmaan' and on Sony Entertainment Television Asia - 'Virrudh', both of which have gone off air.
When contacted, Smriti as usual chose to remain quiet on the issue. Smriti said, "Honestly, I can't reveal anything as of now. We are coming up with a family drama on ZEE for sure. I make it a point to never talk on my behalf. I always let the channel do the talking. So I think the best person to talk to would be somebody from the channel."
Tarun Mehra, Business Head of ZEE Telefilms Ltd., also did not seem to be in a mood to reveal anything about the show. He said, "I am not in a position to reveal anything about the show. We will let you know once everything is decided and when the time is right."
Smriti is also in the process of putting the final touches to her comedy show 'Bai Bole Toh Gangu Bai', which too will be shown on ZEE TV.

9X & Bindaas begin eating into popular channels
From Biz Asia. Posted December 24 2007, 12.06pm
Newcomers into the Indian TV market - 9X and Bindass have begun eating to the shares of long-running channels like Sony Entertainment Television Asia, Sahara One, MTV and Channel V, according to latest data.
Business Standard is reporting that while 9X, within a month of its launch, has managed to penetrate nearly 30 per cent of the 76 million cable homes, Bindass, the youth channel from UTV, is generating higher ratings than MTV and Channel V, the two established youth-centric television channels.
According to online rating generated by Audience Measurement and Analytics Ltd for the 10th December (Monday)-16th December (Sunday) period for the prime-time television (8pm-11pm), 9X is generating comparatively similar ratings at various time bands as Sony TV, the general entertainment channel (GEC) running for nearly a decade.
Similarly, UTV’s Bindass has managed to outdo MTV and Channel V on several of the weekdays at prime time shows. For example, on 14th December (Friday) between 9pm-10pm, Bindass generated a rating of 0.21, which is 10 times the ratings generated by Channel V and MTV.
In the GEC space, 9X generated a rating of 0.41 in the 8:30pm-9pm slot, similar to Sony TV on December 15 (Saturday).
Analysts feel that this is because of a high cable household penetration achieved by 9X within a month of its launch coupled with interesting shows like 'Missing Ustaad' and others.
In the long-term, these new channels (including ZEE Next launched on 17th December) may eat into the ad revenue of the big three GECs — STAR Plus, ZEE TV and Sony TV, says an industry source.
The higher ratings of these newly launched channels will have an adverse impact on channels like Sahara One, STAR Utsav and SAB TV among others in the short run.
Among the big three GECs, Sony TV has been at the third place for a long time both in terms of ratings and channel share, with STAR Plus being the numero uno followed closely by ZEE TV.
Both STAR Plus and ZEE TV generate average television ratings of 3.9-5 during weekdays in the prime time viewing band. While Star Plus on most occasions gets the highest viewership ratings, ZEE TV has started displacing STAR Plus shows on several occasions, says the source.

Sawant stalls in second place in 'Nach Baliye'
From Biz Asia. Posted December 23 2007, 1.56pm
The latest series of 'Nach Baliye 3' came to an end last night with favourite Rakhi Sawant having to settle in second place, being beaten by TV personalities Sanjeeda and Aamir.
Sanjeeda-Aamir danced away with the first prize of Rs.2 million and a car while their choreographers Arun and Chetan won Rs.1 million.
Bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan, who entertained the viewers with his one-liners and did many jigs to his hit numbers, announced the winners and gave away the prizes.
Before naming the winners, Salman made a request: "Please don't cry after the announcement because we have not come to mourn here."
However, Rakhi couldn't keep Salman's request. When the results were announced, the drama queen - touted as the sure shot winner - was visibly shocked and immediately left the stage with her partner. She didn't even stay to take the runners up trophy.
The camera captured her crying and sobbing. Later, talking to a television channel, she alleged that votes had been tampered with and she was included in the show merely as a publicity tool.
Rakhi Sawant and her partner Abhishek Awasthi blasted show producers saying Sanjeeda and Aamir only won the title because of a publicity stunt to promote their drama 'Kkayamath', which is also screened on STAR Plus.
'Nach Baliye 3' launches in the UK on Saturday 12th January on STAR Plus.

Smriti Irani producing comedy for ZEE TV
From Biz Asia. Posted December 8 2007, 10.29am
Smriti Irani is surely branching out. After moving away from STAR's 'Kyunki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi', the actress-producer has been busy with work on other channels including Sony Entertainment Television Asia, 9X and NDTV Imagine.
Moreover, earlier this week, Smriti revealed that she was to make her debut in ZEE TV's popular soap 'Teen Bahuraniyaan'. Now, sources at Mumbai Mirror have reported that Smriti is set to make her first comedy show for the number two channel.
The programme has been tentatively titled 'Bai Bole Toh Gangubai'. It will revolve around Gangubai’s life and how she tries to solve the problems of various families living in the society. The half hour weekend primetime show is likely to go on air in December-end (in India) and the shooting will begin in the next two weeks.
Says a source, "The show will revolve around the life of a maid and how she plays an important role in our day to day lives; how she solves small problems of the various families in the society and how, her absence affects our daily lives. The show has largely been inspired by Bawarchi and Hero No 1. It will have different flavors of emotions that make people laugh and cry. It is a very relatable family-oriented story. Gangubai will be a typical Maharashtrian wearing nauvari sari in the show."

New channel 9X opens to a mixed response
From Biz Asia. Posted November 26 2007, 8.37am
INX Media's new Hindi general entertainment channel 9X, which launched earlier this month has opened up to a bag of mixed numbers.
Data for its launch week shows that the channel already has a 20 per cent reach, but in terms of channel share, it has opened lower compared to the likes of SAB and STAR Utsav. TAM Media Research data shows that for the C&S 4+ in the Hindi speaking markets, both in the all day data for the entire week, and the for weekdays primetime data, the channel has got better numbers only to the UTV owned Bindass.
At an all day level for the entire week, 9X has a share of 0.63. In comparison, STAR Utsav is 0.86, SAB is 0.9, STAR One is 1.64, Sahara One is 2, Sony is 2.8, ZEE TV is 7.93 and STAR Plus is 10.09. The recently launched youth channel Bindass has a share of 0.49. If only the weekday primetime is seen, 9X has a share of 0.48, while STAR Utsav has 0.56, SAB has 0.88, Sony is 1.81, STAR One is 1.95, Sahara One is 2.42, ZEE TV is 13.57 and STAR Plus is 15.77.
INX Media officials are "delighted" with the numbers and are touting it to be the “best opening numbers for a C&S channel in the history of Indian television”. Indrani Mukerjea, CEO, INX Media, said, "Things are going as per our plans – from the day we started, the reach numbers have gone up each day – right from November 12 to the close of the week, and will continue to do so."
Karthik Laxminarayan, COO, Madison Media Infinity, voices the section of the industry that is happy with these numbers. He said, "They are very close to the second tier numbers in the first week itself and hence, these are very promising numbers. They have created enough buzz for people to tune in to the channel, and from here it is really up to the content of the channel."
Prasanth Kumar, National Director, CTG, GroupM, on the other hand, is of the opinion that these are not encouraging numbers. He said, "9X is one of the channels that had launched with a high decibel impact plan. The programming line also had a good cast. However, the numbers haven’t given it an impact-at-launch. It shows that the channel certainly didn’t come as a surprise to viewers or clients and agencies."
At a programme level, of the three shows in the primetime slot of 9X – 'Kahe Na Kahe', 'Jiya Jale' and 'Mere Apne' – 'Mere Apne' has delivered the highest with an average rating of 0.2. Siddharth Basu’s first shot at fiction – 'Jiya Jale' – has had an average rating of 0.14, while Ekta Kapoor’s 'Kahe na Kahe' is at an average rating of 0.11. The channel’s comedy band that has a different show on each day of the week at 22:30 has ratings varying from 0.09 to 0.15.
Mukerjea is clear that the channel is not in any hurry to make any changes based on just a week’s data. She said, "We are confident that each of our shows is a unique property, and we don’t have knee jerk reactions to such early numbers."
9X's sister channel 9XM continues its run as market leader in the music sector after only three weeks on air. 9XM is also planning a UK launch next year.

Legendry singer Lata to grace 'STAR Voice Of India'
From Biz Asia. Posted November 1 2007, 8.29am
The nightingale of Indian cinema Lata Mangeshkar has agreed to be a part of STAR Plus' successful reality TV show 'Voice Of India', which comes to an end later this month (Saturday 24th November).
The show's producer-director Gajendra Singh couldn't contain his excitement.
"She has agreed to give the winner the trophy. It took a lot of persuasion, a lot of perseverance. But then it's worth it because Lataji is no ordinary mortal. She's goddess Saraswati reincarnated. And to have her grace our show is the best gift I've received in my 14 years of service to the cause of music," Singh told IANS.
Interestingly, Lataji's sister Asha Bhosle served as the guest judge on the rival music contest show - ZEE TV's 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge' a few months ago.
"But Lataji coming on our show isn't something we planned after Ashaji came on the other show," protested Singh. "We've been trying to persuade her for years to come on our show. This time she has finally agreed."
She met the 'Voice Of India' finalists at her residence during the Ganesh Mahotsav.
"Her advice to the contestants was not to copy any of the established voices. She has always said it's relatively easy to sing popular numbers, much harder to sing original numbers," said Singh.
Seven years ago Lata co-produced STAR's 'Meri Awaaz Suno'.
'STAR Voice Of India' will be shown in the UK in the coming weeks. (more)

'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - Challenge '07' winner crowned
From Biz Asia. Posted October 13 2007, 8.10pm
This year's 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - Challenge' came to an end with Aneek Dhar from Bengal being crowned the winner.
Aneek walked away with nearly 4 crore of the votes, beating Raja Hassan and Amanat Ali to second and third respectively. Raja lost by a margin of 13 lakh.
The finale held at Mumbai's Andheri sports complex had a very enthusiastic audience and a line-up of celebrities.
Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar who was present at the finale declared Aneek as the winner. His prize includes a contract worth Rs 50 lakh with Universal and a new Chevrolet Spark car.
The much anticipated finale came to an end today after a five-month run on ZEE TV. The programme has surpassed the TV ratings of all general entertainment Hindi shows recently. It has also managed to topple STAR Plus' 'Kyunki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' from the number one position in India after reigning the slot for the past few years.
According to an article on Business Standard India the current run of 'Challenge 2007' has earned the channel close to Rs 120 crore from advertisements and sponsors for its 26 episodes beating STAR Plus' 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' with Shah Rukh Khan's advertising revenue from earlier this year. In the UK, the finale of 'Challenge 2007' boasted of ten sponsors - the highest for a UK Asian TV show to date.

STAR calls on Karishma Tanna to save show!
From Biz Asia. Posted October 8 2007, 10.41pm
According to reports, STAR Plus has called on actress Karishma Tanna to boost the falling TRPs of its reality show 'Nach Baliye 3'.
A source told Mumbai Mirror, "The fact that the show is unable to grab enough eyeballs with its current list of participants, they are trying to rope in well-known actors."
Reportedly, Juhi Parmar was also earlier approached to participate but as she did not have a partner, other participants had disagreed with the channel's decision. Hence, she had to opt out of the show. According to the format of the show, the participants have to dance with their partners.
Even though Karishma is seeing Bappa Lahiri, she still did not take up the offer.
Says Karishma, "Yes, I'm performing for Nach Baliye 3, for two episodes. A few days ago, I got a call from the channel to ask if I would be interested to perform on the show.
In India, the show launched with an audience high of 4 TVR. Recently it has been hovering around 3.5 TVR despite continuous media attention.
In the UK, 'Nach Baliye 3' is yet to commence. The programme is being sifted through by media regulator Ofcom to ensure the heavily sponsored show does not break any UK legalisation.

STAR Plus to launch 'Sapna Babul Ka....Bidaai'
From Biz Asia. Posted October 2 2007, 8.20pm
STAR Plus will be consolidating its weekday evening line-up of shows with a new serial in November.
The soap titled 'Sapna Babul Ka...Bidaai' will launch on STAR Plus UK on Monday 12th November.
'Bidaai' is a show of an orphan girl 'Sadhna' and her life's struggle with her biggest asset, that is her own 'beauty' which becomes her biggest curse.
Sadhna, an extremely fair and beautiful girl is in complete contrast with her cousin sister Ragini, who is dark and unattractive. However the two sisters share a great camaraderie of love and bonding despite the differences in their physical attributes. Brought up by her Mama(Prakash Chand) and Mami (Kaushalya) in the beautiful city of Agra, Sadhna a humble and simple person, is left upon the mercy of her relatives after an early death of her mother.
Her father (Kishan Chand) works in America with the only hope to someday fulfill his wife's dream of seeing their daughter's 'Bidaai'. But all this is far from simple, as Sadhna’s mami has always hated her for her beauty and simplicity, which becomes the ground to emotional upheavals in the family.
Meddled with complexities, Sadhna's life is a portrayal of the Indian society’s two-faced attitude towards a woman's beauty which on one hand is her greatest asset and on the other, her greatest curse.
With its strong cast line-up 'Bidaai' will witness coming together of the veterans actors ranging from -Alok Nath (mama), Vibha Chabbir (mami) and Mahesh Thakur (Father), while Parul Chauhan (Ragini) and Sarah Khan (playing the lead character of Sadhna) are the fresh young faces on the show. (more)
'Om Shanti Om' & 'Saawariya' war spills on TV
From Biz Asia. Posted September 27 2007, 9.00am
After Kareena Kapoor unveiled the soundtrack of her forthcoming release 'Jab We Met' (out 25th October) on ZEE TV's hit music show 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - Challenge 2007', the makers of 'Om Shanti Om' and 'Saawariya' are also taking their rivalry to television.
'Om Shanti Om' starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone is one of two blockbusters getting its theatrical release on Diwali (9th November). The other is 'Saawariya', which marks the debut of Ranbir Kapoor (Rishi Kapoor's son) and Sonam Kapoor (Anil Kapoor's daughter).
The outcome of their box office battle will only be known in November; meanwhile the 'Saawariya' team has been confirmed for an appearance on STAR Plus' 'Voice Of India'. 'Om Shanti Om' team on the other hand will be seen on rival ZEE TV's 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - Challenge 2007'. Both episodes will go head-to-head this weekend.
'Voice Of India's' producer-director Gajendra Singh said: "Having Sanjay Bhansali and the two 'Saawariya' debutants on our show was such a delight. Sanjayji is a complete music person."
The 'Om Shanti Om' special features Shreyas Talpade, Deepika Padukone and director Farah Khan. Apparently lead actor Shah Rukh Khan couldn't do the show because of his contract with STAR.
"But he sent a list of requests for the contestants to sing. Those will be featured in the second-half of the show. During the first-half we'll have the contestants singing the 'Om Shanti Om' tracks since two of our judges Vishal and Shekhar are also the music directors of Farah Khan's film," says Payaol Patel of 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - Challenge 2007'. Four kids sacked from STAR Plus' 'Kumkum'

Ekta Kapoor changes locations for STAR soaps
From Biz Asia. Posted September 18 2007, 9.27am
In an attempt to boost its decling ratings, producer Ekta Kapoor is changing locations for three of her flagship shows, screened on STAR Plus.
Recently, when she realised that one of her popular shows, 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii', wasn't getting the desired ratings, she was sure it had something to do with the location. Unlucky sets, she said. So she decided to swap the location with her relatively new show 'Kayamath'.
So now 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii' will shift base to Sankraman, studio number 8, where 'Kayamath' is being currently shot. Interestingly, 'Kahaani...' was originally being shot from this location before 'Kayamath' was launched and Kahaani… took a generation leap.
Almost all flagship shows of Balaji Telefilms were initially being shot at the Sankraman studios. All of them were equally popular with the viewers. These sets are considered lucky for Balaji shows. Now with dipping TRPs the production house has decided to switch its sets and shift 'Kayamath' to Klick Nixon at Saki Naka.
Says a source, "After many Balaji shows lost their TRPs, Ekta, in a meeting with her writers and technicians, asked them to pull up their socks, immediately. 'Kahaani...' is one of her old shows and is very dear to her as well. Sankraman is very lucky for her as the shows shot there have done well. 'Kahaani...', which was being shot there earlier, was shifted to Klick Nixon; while 'Kayamath' is being shot in Sankraman on the sets of 'Kahaani...' for the past eight months. For superstitious reasons and the fact that they want 'Kahaani...' back on track they will now swap the sets of the two shows. The design of the set will not be changed."
Says Meetu, creative head of 'Kahaani...', "We are still discussing how we should alter it to suit 'Kahaani...'"
Creative head of 'Kayamath', Doris Dey, confirms, "Yes, it's true that we are shifting our sets. It was Ekta's decision to change the sets. The present Kayamath set is lucky and it's also the original set of 'Kahaani...' But it will look odd since the present 'Kayamath' set is very modern while 'Kahaani...'set has a traditional look."

STAR Plus & ARY get telling off by Ofcom
From Biz Asia. Posted September 11 2007, 12.04am
Media regulator Ofcom today published its latest Broadcasting Bulletin outlining two viewer complaints over a programme shown on STAR Plus and the other on the now deceased ARY One World.
Kaun Banega Crorepati
STAR Plus, 22 January 2007 (plus other dates) 21:00
A viewer in the UK expressed concerns that 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' appeared to contain product placement by the computer firm, Compaq. The viewer said that the gameshow host repeatedly referred to Compaq.
Rule 10.4 of the Ofcom Code provides that no undue prominence may be given in any programme to a product or service.
Rule 10.5 prohibits product placement. However, the Code states that product placement does not include:
"Television arrangements covering the inclusion of products or services in a programme acquired from outside the UK and films made for cinema provided that no broadcaster regulated by Ofcom and involved in the broadcast of that programme or film directly benefits from the arrangement".
STAR Plus response
STAR Group responded on behalf of the Ofcom licensee, STAR Television Entertainment Ltd. It advised that the programme was acquired from outside the UK and that STAR Television Entertainment Ltd did not directly benefit from any placement arrangement. It acknowledged that Compaq’s red logo was at times visible on the back of the computers although it said that there were no direct close ups on the logo.
It also said that during the show the host addressed the computers on a few occasions with expressions such as "Is that correct, Mr Computer?", "Compaq da", or "Compaq guru", an Indian local dialect expression.
STAR Group considered that the computers were a necessary part of the show and served as a technical tool which allowed both the host and the contestants to view the questions being asked, provide possible answers and then display the correct answer. It added that Compaq had no input into editorial decisions regarding the broadcast of the show in the UK.
The series in question ended in April 2007; however, STAR Group said that, going forward, it would endeavour to comply with Rule 10.4.
Ofcom decision: Breach of Rule 10.4
Bearing in mind the definition of product placement under the Code, Ofcom did not consider that there was a breach of Rule 10.5. However, programmes acquired from outside the UK are nevertheless subject to Rule 10.4, which prohibits unduly prominent references to products and services.
Ofcom noted that the game show host used a range of expressions in addressing the computers used in the programme. Some of these expressions included the brand name, Compaq. However, this was part of the host’s light-hearted patter, which was integral to the show.
Ofcom considered that it would have been difficult to have
edited the host’s verbal references from the UK broadcast and that, on balance, these references in themselves were not unduly prominent. However, if they were to become more frequent or otherwise prominent within the programme, then this could raise problems under Rule 10.4.
In addition to the host’s verbal references, the computers themselves featured branding for Compaq in clearly legible red lettering when shown in close up with the presenter and contestant. The branding appeared to have been deliberately positioned on the computers to ensure its visibility on-screen. Ofcom considered that there was insufficient editorial justification for inclusion of the branding and that it could have been edited out from the UK broadcast (for example, using blurring techniques) without compromising the editorial content. Whilst Ofcom welcomed the assurances from STAR Group regarding compliance going forward, it concluded that the visual references to Compaq in the series in question were unduly prominent.
Sponsorship of ARY One World News
ARY One World, various dates and times
Ofcom was contacted by a viewer who said that news on ARY One World appeared to be sponsored.
Ofcom rule 9.1 of the Code prohibits the sponsorship of news and current affairs on television.
Ofcom obtained a recording of sample output transmitted in February 2007. Ofcom noted that there was a sponsorship credit for the news which announced in English, "This news detail was brought to you by Mobile Zone and Sony Ericsson”. Subsequently, there was another sponsorship credit for the news; the voiceover said, "This news headline is brought to you by Super Asia Microwave Oven". Ofcom requested the broadcaster’s comments.
ARY One World response
ARY One World said that, at the time that Ofcom reviewed the output, ARY One World was "a live and single beam channel" involving a "turn-around" of its South Asian signal. In other words, what was broadcast in the UK was precisely the same output as that being broadcast at the same time to audiences in South Asia and elsewhere.
The broadcaster said that, in other parts of the world where the output was transmitted, there were no regulations prohibiting the sponsorship of news. The broadcaster went on to say that it was "technically extremely complicated to remove branding and sponsorship messages before turn-around without delay", and that to do this required a "sophisticated infrastructure". It initially claimed that it had made arrangements for a "clean beam" in order to fully comply with Ofcom’s regulations, and envisaged that the new infrastructure would shortly be in place.
However, the broadcaster subsequently advised Ofcom that these arrangements had turned out to be not "technically feasible" and that the channel had therefore ceased to operate with effect from 23rd July 2007.
Ofcom decision: Breach of Rule 9.1
European legislation prohibits television news and current affairs programmes from being sponsored. The Code, which broadcasters licensed in the UK are required to comply with, therefore prohibits sponsorship of news and current affairs on television.
News broadcast on ARY One World included clear sponsorship messages and was therefore in breach of Rule 9.1.

Sony TV rubbishes 'Viruddh' axe rumours
From Biz Asia. Posted August 31 2007, 9.28am
Sony Entertainment Television Asia's Executive Vice President and Business Head, Albert Almeida has rubbished rumours that its Smriti Z Irani produced soap 'Viruddh' is facing the axe.
Earlier this week, newspapers in India reported the soap was being dropped bt the channel due to declining ratings and a possibility of an Ekta Kapoor soap filling the "vacant" 21:30 slot.
A report in Mid-Day quoted Almeida, saying 'Viruddh' is here to stay. "It is not going off air. These are baseless rumours and I don’t know who is spreading them. We have immense faith in the show and will continue to support it."
When asked if Smriti’s show is being replaced by a new Balaji show, he says, "We are in talks with Ekta Kapoor for new content, but that doesn’t mean that a Balaji show is taking Virrudh’s place."
In fact, we have extended Smriti’s contract with us beyond September 2007. Why would we do that if we wanted to wrap up the show?"
'Viruddh' has yet to make mark in the ratings in India. Nevertheless the soap has received immense critical acclaim.

Sony TV axes soap 'Ek Ladki Anjani Si'
From Biz Asia. Posted August 29 2007, 8.44am
After yesterday's news about Sony Entertainment Television Asia pulling the plug on Smriti Z Irani's soap 'Viruddh', today we can reveal 'Ek Ladki Anjani Si' will be axed next month.
It’s certainly the case of out with the old and in with the new at the channel, just in time for the upcoming festivities.
'Ek Ladki Anjani Si' has been running for two years and will be completing 360 episodes next month. However, the duration has not reflected in its ratings. The show has suffered due to competition from rival channels.
Sai Deodhar who plays the lead character in the soap gave her reaction to Mumbai Mirror, "Mine is a mixed reaction now, about the show ending. The show has been such a part of my life for the last one year and has been getting good TRPs. I will miss it a lot. And yes, I do regret not taking on a couple of shows which were offered to me by producers from Dubai. And a couple of offers from the television industry here as well. They were to begin in September-October this year, so I had no dates. It is late to rethink about those shows now. I am feeling a bit insecure, since I don't know if I'll be shooting tomorrow. This profession is very unpredictable these days."
Misha Gautam, producer of the show explained why the channel had announced to axed 'Ek Ladki Anjani Si', "Sony is trying to change all its shows. The TRPs of the shows are low, so the channel is bringing in new shows. It's time to get newer stuff on the channel. We have completed 360 episodes over two years, which is a long run."
'Ek Ladki Anjani Si' will end on Wednesday 12th September. A replacement is yet to be confirmed.
