It’s just semantics, Auntie, when it comes to sponsors
From The Times. Posted March 5 2008, 11.55pm
The first rule of television - and the only one that everybody knows - is that
there are no adverts on the BBC. Commercials are, of course, the wretched
business of ITV, Channel 4 and the rest - the kind of broadcasters who,
apparently, entice us to engorge ourselves with the occasional display of
“junk” food advertising. Those who dislike the commercial message, and have
no need to visit the bathroom in the middle of their favourite programmes,
can escape to the haven of the BBC's output, where, of course, there is no
sort of insidious advertising. Right? (more)

No escape for Sky: The curse of The Prisoner
From The Independent. Posted September 25 2007, 12.30pm
"I am not a number, I am a free man": Patrick McGoohan's famous cri de coeur from the Sixties television drama The Prisoner possibly affords the 79-year-old actor a bitter chuckle these days. I have no idea how McGoohan, living in retirement in Los Angeles, privately views his career since he last uttered the line, but I hope it's with a sense of irony, because for millions of TV viewers across the globe McGoohan will forever be a number. Number Six, of course. The American-born Irish actor has been imprisoned by the role as subtly and as surely as his renegade government agent was held captive in The Village. (more)

Xfm Manchester's launch campaign has escaped a ban for causing offence in the city. The ads were placed on billboards and bus shelters, and featured babies dressed up and posing as iconic music characters, with the strapline "a new music station is born". The poster which generated 23 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority showed two babies posing as the Gallagher brothers, the Liam baby giving a V sign to the passing public.
"I imagine these are the same sort of people who don't go to zoo as baboons have exposed bottoms," Ande Macpherson, Programme Director for GCap North told Radiojam, "the reality is that the creative execution connected with anyone who would interested in Xfm Manchester and the amount of positive feedback dwarves the offended voices." The golden age of grunt'n'groan
From The Independent. Posted February 18 2006, 12.00am
The wrestler Jackie Pallo this week found himself in a half-Nelson from which there was no escape, not even by pretending to bite. It was the Big C that got him, an opponent even more formidable than Big Daddy. And with time-travelling to the 1970s conveniently in vogue thanks to the BBC's acclaimed Monday-night drama Life on Mars, many of us read his obituaries and were propelled directly back to those Saturday tea-times in front of a gas fire three decades ago, for Jackie Pallo was a name as powerfully evocative of the kipper-tie decade as Lord Lucan, Red Rum and Gilbert O'Sullivan.
