SAB TV to reposition to a comedy channel
From Biz Asia. Posted June 23 2008, 1.04am
Sony Entertainment Network's youth orientated channel SAB TV is reverting back to being a comedy channel, come Monday 30th June. The channel, which launched in India in 2005 (UK earlier this year) has undergone a couple of makeovers already but this time around its more serious than ever to concentrate on the comedy genre. According to IndianTelevision, SAB TV will be launching a daily comedy soap called 'Lo Ho Gayi Pooja Is Ghar Ki' from 30th June. It will replace 'Jersey Number 10' in the 21:00 Monday to Thursday slot. Other new additions to the prime time schedule will be dubbed Hollywood shows such as 'Home Improvement', 'Wife and Kid', 'According to Jim' and '8 Simple Rules'. It has also acquired comedy series of 'Charlie Chaplin' and 'Laurel and Hardy' which will be aired shortly. American sitcoms in dubbed version 'Home Improvement' and 'Wife and Kid' will kick off in the first week of July from 19:00 - 20:00. The shows will be repeated between 23:00 and midnight. SAB business head Anooj Kapoor says, "With our new repositioning we will highlight positive values of families. We will become a comedy channel skewed towards families with our target group being people aged four years and above. "Until now we had showcased episodic comedies but for the first time we are getting a trend of linear family comedy," avers Kapoor. As a part of the entire revamp, the channel has also introduced a comedy track in its flagship show 'Left Right Left' (LRL). "According to a survey that we did in our TG, shows like LRL and Jersey Number 10 had no more remained top of the mind recall for them. Our viewers could relate to only comedy with SAB," answers Kapoor. In the last few months the channel went on a spree of launching comedy based reality and fiction shows like 'Krazy Kiya Re', 'Comedy Ka King Kaun' and 'Bhago KK Aya'. SAB TV is a part of the MAX Mix pack on Sky Digital. Related links: SAB TV makes official Sky EPG launch SAB TV adds four new shows to primetime Sony to re-position & revamp its SAB channel (more)

SAB TV makes official Sky EPG launch
From Biz Asia. Posted April 24 2008, 7.40pm
Sony Entertainment Network's light-entertainment channel SAB TV has made its official launch on Sky Digital today. As exclusively revealed by BizAsia.co.uk last week, SAB TV was to launch in an existing EPG slot on Sky. We later announced that SAB TV was taking over EPG 819, replacing Sahara FILMY. The channel has unable to achieve the same success it has in India here due to film rights issues so was dependent on a high repeat pattern of movies, which could be the reason behind its sudden demise in the UK. Some programming properties from Sahara FILMY will be shifted to Sahara One in the coming weeks. Whilst the network has remained tight-lipped on the move, it seems the decision was made as an effort to bolster its MAX Mix bundle of channels. With the launch of SAB TV, the network will use it as an alternative GEC (general entertainment channel) to Sahara One. SAB TV is available as part of the MAX Mix package on Sky channel 819. Confirmed: Salman to front show for Sony TV
From Biz Asia. Posted April 5 2008, 12.28pm
As we revealed last week, it has now been confirmed by Sony Entertainment Television Asia that Bollywood hunk Salman Khan will be fronting a gameshow for the channel from June. The desi version of 'Power of 10' is being produced by Synergy Adlabs. Sony TV will use the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the lead in for the show. According to Sony TV business head Albert Almeida, the show is more inclusive and audience participatory compared to other gameshows. Almeida adds that participants will need to have an educated stance and a decisive point of view to succeed. "If an issue affects him/her, then it is likely that the participant will answer as per the feelings. If the question pertains to an issue that is far from the individual's issue, then the participant will have to think about it." A participant can choose to exit the show at any point of time. If the participant however carries on and answers incorectly, then the amount won is lost. In the beginning two participants face off for the right to play the game. In the US the show airs on CBS and is hosted by Drew Carey. On rival channel STAR Plus India, it has begun marketing activities for its own upcoming mega gameshow 'Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain?' hosted by King Khan - Shah Rukh. 9X & Bindaas begin eating into popular channels
From Biz Asia. Posted December 24 2007, 12.06pm
Newcomers into the Indian TV market - 9X and Bindass have begun eating to the shares of long-running channels like Sony Entertainment Television Asia, Sahara One, MTV and Channel V, according to latest data. Business Standard is reporting that while 9X, within a month of its launch, has managed to penetrate nearly 30 per cent of the 76 million cable homes, Bindass, the youth channel from UTV, is generating higher ratings than MTV and Channel V, the two established youth-centric television channels. According to online rating generated by Audience Measurement and Analytics Ltd for the 10th December (Monday)-16th December (Sunday) period for the prime-time television (8pm-11pm), 9X is generating comparatively similar ratings at various time bands as Sony TV, the general entertainment channel (GEC) running for nearly a decade. Similarly, UTV’s Bindass has managed to outdo MTV and Channel V on several of the weekdays at prime time shows. For example, on 14th December (Friday) between 9pm-10pm, Bindass generated a rating of 0.21, which is 10 times the ratings generated by Channel V and MTV. In the GEC space, 9X generated a rating of 0.41 in the 8:30pm-9pm slot, similar to Sony TV on December 15 (Saturday). Analysts feel that this is because of a high cable household penetration achieved by 9X within a month of its launch coupled with interesting shows like 'Missing Ustaad' and others. In the long-term, these new channels (including ZEE Next launched on 17th December) may eat into the ad revenue of the big three GECs — STAR Plus, ZEE TV and Sony TV, says an industry source. The higher ratings of these newly launched channels will have an adverse impact on channels like Sahara One, STAR Utsav and SAB TV among others in the short run. Among the big three GECs, Sony TV has been at the third place for a long time both in terms of ratings and channel share, with STAR Plus being the numero uno followed closely by ZEE TV. Both STAR Plus and ZEE TV generate average television ratings of 3.9-5 during weekdays in the prime time viewing band. While Star Plus on most occasions gets the highest viewership ratings, ZEE TV has started displacing STAR Plus shows on several occasions, says the source. New channel 9X opens to a mixed response
From Biz Asia. Posted November 26 2007, 8.37am
INX Media's new Hindi general entertainment channel 9X, which launched earlier this month has opened up to a bag of mixed numbers. Data for its launch week shows that the channel already has a 20 per cent reach, but in terms of channel share, it has opened lower compared to the likes of SAB and STAR Utsav. TAM Media Research data shows that for the C&S 4+ in the Hindi speaking markets, both in the all day data for the entire week, and the for weekdays primetime data, the channel has got better numbers only to the UTV owned Bindass. At an all day level for the entire week, 9X has a share of 0.63. In comparison, STAR Utsav is 0.86, SAB is 0.9, STAR One is 1.64, Sahara One is 2, Sony is 2.8, ZEE TV is 7.93 and STAR Plus is 10.09. The recently launched youth channel Bindass has a share of 0.49. If only the weekday primetime is seen, 9X has a share of 0.48, while STAR Utsav has 0.56, SAB has 0.88, Sony is 1.81, STAR One is 1.95, Sahara One is 2.42, ZEE TV is 13.57 and STAR Plus is 15.77. INX Media officials are "delighted" with the numbers and are touting it to be the “best opening numbers for a C&S channel in the history of Indian television”. Indrani Mukerjea, CEO, INX Media, said, "Things are going as per our plans – from the day we started, the reach numbers have gone up each day – right from November 12 to the close of the week, and will continue to do so." Karthik Laxminarayan, COO, Madison Media Infinity, voices the section of the industry that is happy with these numbers. He said, "They are very close to the second tier numbers in the first week itself and hence, these are very promising numbers. They have created enough buzz for people to tune in to the channel, and from here it is really up to the content of the channel." Prasanth Kumar, National Director, CTG, GroupM, on the other hand, is of the opinion that these are not encouraging numbers. He said, "9X is one of the channels that had launched with a high decibel impact plan. The programming line also had a good cast. However, the numbers haven’t given it an impact-at-launch. It shows that the channel certainly didn’t come as a surprise to viewers or clients and agencies." At a programme level, of the three shows in the primetime slot of 9X – 'Kahe Na Kahe', 'Jiya Jale' and 'Mere Apne' – 'Mere Apne' has delivered the highest with an average rating of 0.2. Siddharth Basu’s first shot at fiction – 'Jiya Jale' – has had an average rating of 0.14, while Ekta Kapoor’s 'Kahe na Kahe' is at an average rating of 0.11. The channel’s comedy band that has a different show on each day of the week at 22:30 has ratings varying from 0.09 to 0.15. Mukerjea is clear that the channel is not in any hurry to make any changes based on just a week’s data. She said, "We are confident that each of our shows is a unique property, and we don’t have knee jerk reactions to such early numbers." 9X's sister channel 9XM continues its run as market leader in the music sector after only three weeks on air. 9XM is also planning a UK launch next year. Ofcom awards Sony TV licence for SAB
From Biz Asia. Posted November 7 2007, 9.32pm
Rumours of Sony Entertainment Television Asia launching its sibling entertainment channel SAB can finally be put to rest. Today, media regulator Ofcom confirmed that a licence for SAB had been awarded meaning the channel can now launch in the UK market. Sony Entertainment Television Asia's runs the MAX Mix bouquet of channels currently consisting of movie channels MAX and Sahara Filmy, entertainment channel Sahara One, Pakistani infotainment channel ARY Digital and India's leading news channel Aaj Tak. To consolidate its package and add further variety, the network will no doubt add SAB as an alternative entertainment offering to Sahara One and ARY Digital, instead slanting it towards a comedy/youthful genre channel. With Sky clamping down on the number of channels it launches on its platform, many Asian TV channels are getting in the launch queue quicker than before. A few weeks ago, it was revealed on BizAsia.co.uk that ZEE Network is getting ready to launch up to five new channels to form a bouquet of its own. ZEE TV postpones "unready" serial 'Ardhangini'
From Biz Asia. Posted October 19 2007, 9.09am
ZEE TV shocked the producers Kinnari and Jay Mehta of its soon-to-launch serial 'Ardhangini' when it was pulled off the air in the last minute. Heavy promotional activity advertised 'Ardhangini' to go live in India on Monday (15th October) and on ZEE TV UK this Monday (22nd October), however according to Mumbai Mirror, the banked episodes of 'Ardhangini' had to re-shot. The channel scrapped the entire bouquet of episodes, the producers were upset with the director, Pawan Sahu, for not following the brief. They have sacked him. Pawan Kumar has been roped in as the new director. Since 'Ardhangini' is a big-budget project the channel wanted the look to be sleek. A source in the production house told Mumbai Mirror, "It's a big- budget show and the channel wanted everything to be perfect. The production house and the creative heads at the channel had several meetings on the concept, look and the style of the show. In fact, we had shot episodes that would last almost a month but the channel was very unhappy. They wanted the lead actress Sudeepa Singh's character, Kangana, to be modeled after Paro of Devdas. But it did not turn up like the way it was conceived. Now we are re-shooting it and there's too much pressure." Ashish Kaul, executive vice president of ZEE TV told Mumbai Mirror, "As a channel, we have to keep in mind the long term benefits. The production house is like a mother who never sees any fault in her child, but we have to keep a check on quality control. I think the producers should understand that quality content will make a show big with the viewers. Nowadays, channels pump in a lot of money into the shows and we have to keep that in mind." After Sahara One, FILMY gets ready for revamp
From Biz Asia. Posted October 8 2007, 10.11pm
Sahara's TV channels in the UK are finally making headway by announcing the launches of several new innovative shows. As BizAsia.co.uk reported last week, its flagship entertainment channel Sahara One will be launching a new drama produced by Paresh Rawal called 'Main Aisi Kyun Hoon', starting at 20:30 on Monday 22nd October. Over on Sahara's movies service FILMY, comedy show called 'Jigar Ma Badi Aag Hai!' will launch, which will star TV favourites Neena Gupta, Kanwaljeet and Sunil Grover (of 'Kaun Banega Champu' fame). Speaking about the show, Suchita Shah, Senior Supervisory Producer - FILMY said, "FILMY has always strived to entertain the masses through innovative film based programming, be it movie jockeys like Lallan or original software like Kaun Banega Champu and Rokkky's 99. Jigar Ma Badi Aag Hai! is one such show, which in a humorous way, covers the impact of a phenomena called Bollywood, on the lives of every Indian. With clichéd Hindi film plots and dialogues that have acquired cult status over the years, and with music and treatment that is 100% FILMY, Jigar Ma Badi Aag! is an out an out comedy show, that could not have been anywhere else but on FILMY!" 'Jigar Ma Badi Aag Hai!' comes on the back of the success of FILMY's reality talent show 'Bathroom Singer', which is shown on Sunday nights. In the pipeline, the channel also plans to launch, what it has dubbed the "biggest Bollywood quiz show" 'Bollywood Ka Boss', which will be hosted by Boman Irani. 'Jigar Ma Badi Aag Hai!' launches on Sunday 21st October at 20:30. Related links: Sahara One's new marketing strategy: Cricket Sahara One to launch Paresh Rawal soap (more)

Channel I to replace Channel S NTV on Sky
From Biz Asia. Posted August 28 2007, 1.04pm
Troubled Bangladeshi service NTV, distributed in the UK by Channel S will be replaced by Bangla news provider Channel I, according to the broadcaster. Channel S NTV was previously available on Sky Digital EPG 826; however its transmission was disrupted in February when a fire struck in the building where the channel is based in Dhaka. Since then, the UK feed had to rely on looped NTV shows, which subsequently were suspended to make way for a temporary channel replacement by the name of MTN. The religious channel will remain on air until mid-September before its EPG space is permanently taken over by Channel I. Channel I was the first digital channel to launch in Bangaldesh in 1999. The channel broadcasts educational, news and entertainment content. There are also plans to resurrect NTV in the UK once its broadcast has been rectified in Bangladesh. ZEEL Q1 results show impressive figures
From Biz Asia. Posted July 18 2007, 9.13am
ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has reported its first quarter consolidated revenues of Rs 3,916 million, representing a 35 per cent growth over the corresponding period in the previous fiscal. The consolidated operating profit stood at Rs 1,197 million. These are higher by 81 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter last fiscal. Operating profit margin rose by 30.6 per cent from 23 per cent, as compared to the corresponding quarter last fiscal. Profit before tax for the first quarter of fiscal 2007 was Rs 1,225 million, while net profit was Rs 813 million, recording a growth of 51 per cent over the corresponding period last year. The company registered advertisement revenue of Rs 2,044 million for the first quarter ended June 30, 2007, an increase of 47 per cent as compared to the corresponding period last fiscal. The average channel share of the flagship channel increased to 25 per cent within the general entertainment genre, which increased by 10 per cent from the previous quarter. Subhash Chandra, Chairman, ZEEL, said, "We are pleased that operating margins have improved to 30.6 per cent, compared to the 23 per cent in the first quarter last fiscal. Most of us are aware of the exciting opportunities ahead of us in the television content business. We are making the right investments in capturing a larger mind share of the viewers, both nationally and globally. With rapid transformation in the Indian media scenario through digitisation, the coming years hold a lot of promise and we are confident of delivering long term shareholder value." Punit Goenka, Director, ZEEL, said, "We continued to gain market share in the general entertainment genre. ZEE TV has maintained its ratings across time bands and has averaged 234 gross rating points during the quarter, and an average channel share of 25 per cent within the general entertainment category, up from 23 per cent during the previous quarter.” He further stated that during the quarter, ZEE TV had come closest ever to the genre leader in the last seven years. Goenka explained that STAR Plus’ 'KBC-3', which went off-air in mid-April, helped both 'Kasamh Se' and 'Saat Phere' to regain their respective leadership positions. 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007' continues to be the leader despite many shows based on a similar theme. Elaborating on the performance, Pradeep Guha, CEO, ZEEL, said, "Our team has done well, both in gaining viewership share and in monetising that effectively. We are pleased with the good start to the fiscal year. On the international business front, we continued to do well, though rising strength of rupee has impacted our revenues." Guha further said that in terms of sports, his company had got out of the cricket contract, and that it is looking forward to build franchise in football. He said that the channel would showcase cricket from the Indian Cricket League. The sports genre for the flagship company saw Ten Sports as a clear winner as it registered a 51 per cent viewership share. ZEE Sports and Ten Sports will now look forward to a strong second quarter with a variety of joint ventures. They will increase their joint impact on the market, particularly in August, as both channels will share a new line-up of football rights, including deals with various football clubs. ZEE TV's sibling station to launch in India
From Biz Asia. Posted July 13 2007, 12.35am
It was confirmed earlier this year that ZEE Network will be launching a sister station to its flagship ZEE TV service. Today, ZEE Network officials have announced the sibling tentatively titled ZEE Next (as revealed on BizAsia.co.uk this year) will be going live in September in India. According to a report on IndianTelevision, ZEEL director Punit Goenka said the launch of the channel will coincide with the upcoming festive season. "From the very start, it would be a pay channel," he added. Unlike the main service, ZEE Next will be targeting a much younger audience - viewers aged between 15 and 25. The channel will address more contemporary issues especially in its portrayal of women. Although its main target will be the youth demographic, it will "not alienate the housewife," he added. ZEE Next is being launched to compete with the likes of STAR One and Sony's secondary entertainment channel SAB TV. Our sources at ZEE Network UK have said that ZEE Next will also be available to UK viewers months after its India debut. ZEE UK is also expected to make an announcement in the coming days about its ZEE Radio service and the launch of ZEE News here. TV ratings: 'Indian Idol 3' gets off to good start
From Biz Asia. Posted May 14 2007, 9.10am
Its been over a year now since ZEE TV took the helm to become India's number two channel in India (STAR Plus at top). This resulted in former number two - Sony Entertainment Television Asia being pushed to number three/four in the competitive Indian TV market. Officials at Sony TV are hoping that the new series of its popular show 'Indian Idol 3' change the fortunes for the broadcaster. Though the show, which opened with a TVR of 3.03 on Friday 4th May, certainly helped the channel increase its share in the time slot, it couldn’t catapult Sony TV out of the number 3 slot. As per TAM Media Research (C&S, 4+, HSM), the show managed a TVR of 3.08 with the second episode on Saturday 5th May, and its channel share in the 21:00-22:00 slot on Friday and Saturday went up from 10.77 per cent in the previous week to 28.65 per cent in Week 18 among GECs. But overall, for the whole week, the show could increase SET’s market share by only a few marginal percentage points from 12.59 per cent in Week 17 to 13.08 per cent in Week 18, the week when the show was aired. In comparison, the other two lead channels – STAR Plus and ZEE TV – garnered a channel share of 37.93 per cent and 24.97 per cent, respectively. Anita Nayyar, CEO, MPG, India, is of the opinion that the ratings of 'Indian Idol' are still satisfactory as this is the third season of the reality series. "The show can’t achieve what it did in the first season or even in the second season, when it started off with a much bigger TVR," says Nayyar. The first two seasons had opened with a TVR of 5.4. Nayyar says SET needs to do more than an ‘Indian Idol’ to get close to ZEE, forget STAR Plus as of now. Close observers of the industry expect the competition to heat up for 'Indian Idol' once STAR’s 'Voice of India' is on air. "It's already competing with 'Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' on ZEE TV, which is also a talent hunt show for singers," says Tarun Nigam, executive director, North, Starcom. "In fact, ZEE’s 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' started off with a better TVR of 4.0," Nayyar adds. Analysing the reasons for 'Indian Idol's' not so great performance, a senior media planner says, “The first two episodes of 'Indian Idol 3' had too much reality in them, probably the promoters served too much 'masala', which might have killed the appetite." Now STAR does 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa'
From Biz Asia. Posted April 14 2007, 10.37am
STAR seems to be on a roll to produce programming to rival its number two opposition ZEE TV. In what looks like an imitating move, STAR Plus will now launch its own talent hunt show to compete with ZEE's hit show 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa'. Coincidently, the STAR show name is quite similar to that of ZEE TV's top musical reality show. The programme is named 'STAR Voice of India-Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa' and will air on flagship channel STAR Plus from mid-May. The similar programme name and format does not come as a huge surprise as it is former ZEE TV producer Gajendra Siingh who is behind the new STAR show. Siingh will also direct the show. Singer Shaan will host the show (former Sa Re Ga Ma Pa presenter on ZEE TV). 'Voice of India' elevates the concept of talent hunts and reality television to a whole new level with its unique and innovative format. The selected singers from each audition city will get the opportunity to perform live in their respective cities at exciting ground events even before the show goes on air. After an exhaustive round of auditions and performances, 30 finalists will come together for a chance to compete to become the ‘Voice of India’. Siingh said, "Music is our passion and has always been. We have always endeavoured to do something with music since we are very involved with this concept. Talent scouting is our forte. Our focus has always been to tap talent, and with 'Voice of India', we are here to do that once again. The differentiation in this cluttered space is the music and the participants. Besides best production values, we are also trying to bring in a new and interesting format to make the show a success. With backing from a channel like STAR Plus, we are confident that we will touch greater heights." Musicians Alka Yagnik, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Aadesh Shrivastava, Jatin and Lalit Pandit will form the esteemed panel of judges. ZEE TV said that if the STAR show is in anyway similar to its, then the broadcaster will take legal action, "If we find the content and format of Star’s new show any way similar to our show, we will take legal recourse and serve them legal notice," said Ashish Kaul, senior vice president of ZEE group. When Gajendra Siingh defected to STAR last year, his first production for the network was the ever popular 'Antakshari’ show to rival ZEE TV's own 'Antakshari' gameshow. ZEE TV's 'Antakshari' has been able to edge its rival in the TV ratings war. Also a few months ago, ZEE issued STAR TV a legal notice over the name of a drama both channels were to launch. 'Betiyaan' on ZEE TV started days before STAR One launched its own drama, which also carried a similar storyline. STAR One was forced to change its show name to 'Betiyaan Apni Yaa...Paraya Dhan’. "Once STAR Vijaya, the tamil channel of STAR India was launching Saregamapa and we had served then legal notice expressing our reservations. They withdrew the show. Again, when STAR One was launching a soap called Betiyaan...similar to a ZEE soap, we objected and they had to change the name," Kaul added. Last year, ZEE TV bounced back to the number two position thanks to the successful 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa -Challenge 2006' contest. STAR Plus is hoping its own 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa' drives new viewers to its channel. ZEE TV launches 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa -Challenge 2007' next month also. TAM data shows "encouraging start" for KBC 3
From Biz Asia. Posted February 2 2007, 8.56am
After two weeks of being on air, the results by audience measuring body (India)-TAM are out and has shown a decent start to the Shah Rukh Khan hosted 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'. It must be noted that a direct comparison to the numbers last year would not be correct as TAM has expanded markets beginning January 2007. Looking at numbers now, the 21:00 - 22:00 day-part from Monday to Thursday has grown for Hindi general entertainment channels (GEC). From a share of 45 per cent in week 3 (one week prior to KBC launch), the share in week 4 was 57.95 per cent. In the three Hindi metros, the number has grown from 32.11 per cent to 48.41 per cent. For STAR Plus, the relative share of the channel was 37.7 in week 3 for HSM and this has increased to 60 per cent in the KBC week. In the three metros, the jump is from 33.7 per cent to 62.7 per cent. In the HSM, KBC-SRK opened at a TRP of 12.33 on 22nd January 2007. It came down to 10.44 on the second day and further down to 7.36 in episode three, but the final episode of the week picked up again to throw up a TRP of 9.24. Looking at the Hindi metros now, the opening TRP was 11.26, which moved to 9.1, 6.03 and then to 7.65 on the final day of the week. However, KBC has done some good to STAR Plus. The week it aired KBC saw an increase in its relative channel share to 55.9 per cent, from 37.7 per cent in the previous week among general entertainment channels. This was mainly at the cost of ZEE’s viewership, which in Week 3 of 2007 was at par with STAR Plus, with a channel share of 37.6 per cent, but could only manage a 21.5 per cent share in Week 4, 2007.
