Geo UK on cloud nine over Twenty20 cricket
From Biz Asia. Posted September 25 2007, 9.47pm
Pakistani broadcaster Geo UK has told BizAsia.co.uk that its recent ICC Twenty20 cricket coverage has proven to be a "brilliant success story for the channel". As reported earlier this week, entertainment TV channels in India have suffered a blow after viewers opted to watch India and Pakistan's triumph performance in the Twenty20 series on sport channels like ESPN and STAR Cricket. In the UK, the series was shared between main broadcaster Sky Sports (English) and Geo UK (Urdu). Sky Sports remained neutral on the outcome of the tournament. When BizAsia.co.uk asked Sky Sports about the response it gained from the first ever World Twenty20, it refused to comment on what they called "fairly commercially sensitive information." Meanwhile, Geo UK, which has witnessed a huge response from advertisers and viewers during the series was quick to comment, "All I can say Twenty20 turned out to be brilliant success story for the channel. We had such a superb response from our valued advertisers and esteem viewers that its hard to express in words. Future acquisitions can't comment at this stage! But of course Geo TV thrives to provide its viewers with only premium content and nothing below." Geo UK is also gearing to launch its news channel in the coming months. As well as that, the broadcaster also plans to encrypt its main service, along with its youth channel Aag. Aaj TV in Pakistan faces closure?
From Biz Asia. Posted April 24 2007, 12.52pm
A month after the offices of Pakistan’s leading private television channel Geo were ransacked by the law enforcement agencies, the second largest television channel, Aaj, faces suspension of its transmissions for its 'irresponsible coverage' of the proceedings of the presidential reference against the suspended chief justice of the Supreme Court. However, the management of the Aaj television says that the channel was being targeted by the information ministry for defying the government attempts to influence its reporting of the ongoing judicial crisis, which has created a plethora of troubles for General Musharraf. According to Arshad Zuberi, the managing director of Aaj Television, the management has been served with a legal notice asking it to explain why it had not sought government permission to uplink its signals from the country. The notice accuses the channel of inciting violence by casting the armed forces in an unfavourable light. The channel has been given three days to reply or face the consequences. He made it clear that Aaj won’t take the chief justice case off air, as desired by the government. "The judicial crisis was not created by television channels but by the government and it will have to tackle it now", Zuberi said. The channel is owned by the Zuberi family, which also operate the Business Recorder, Pakistan’s oldest and most respected financial newspaper. According to Zuberi, the suspension of the chief justice and the subsequent crisis has literally paralysed the government which has resorted to underhand tactics to silence the fourth pillar of the state. Geo TV's Pakistan offices raided by police
From Biz Asia. Posted March 17 2007, 11.39am
Police stormed Geo TV’s offices and tear-gassed employees on Friday after its editors refused to stop broadcasting pictures of protests against the chief justice’s suspension, as Aaj TV’s transmission was reportedly "disrupted" and as its head of the news section said the channel was working under great pressure over the chief justice trial. According to Reuters, Geo’s Islamabad News Bureau Chief Hamid Mir said that police broke windows and released teargas in the office. "They’re demanding a camera installed on the roof be removed," said Mir. Geo was able to broadcast live pictures of the police bursting into the office. Transmissions from the rooftop ended a short time later. Geo’s rooftop camera had a panoramic view of the anti-government demonstrations. Police also damaged the neighbouring office of The News daily. "We hold the president and the prime minister directly responsible for this," said The News bureau chief. Meanwhile, AFP quoted Talat Hussain, the Aaj TV head of news section, as saying, "We have been told not to make Chaudhry a hero. We are even being threatened with the cancellation of our licence if we give undue coverage to his trial." Daily Times Monitor adds: Geo TV reported that its office in Karachi was evacuated after an unknown caller raised a false alarm that bombs had been planted in the building.
