Colors opens up with encouraging figures
From Biz Asia. Posted August 2 2008, 2.16am
The newly launched channel Colors from Viacom 18 Media has opened up to a positive response across India. Data issued to BizAsia.co.uk for the week ending 26th July saw Colors start with 81 gross rating points (GRPs). Compared to other recently launched Indian TV channels, Colors has had a spectacular launch. Earlier this year, NDTV Imagine garnered 55 GRPs in its first week of launch (20-26 January). 9X, on the other hand, recorded a GRP of 21, but later climbed the ratings ladder. ZEE Next crawled with a 6 GRP in its opening week. Colors lags behind market leader STAR Plus, ZEE TV, Sony TV, NDTV Imagine, 9X and STAR One. Colors clarifies that the 81 GRPs have come from five-and-half days of programming while the other channels have captured the ratings for seven days. Observers also say the second week ratings will indicate the actual positioning of the channel. The GEC market seems to have expanded with the new launches. "Clearly, the market has grown. After the first week of sampling, now the effort is to hold up the stake. The important thing here is that our ratings are not driven by a single show but by three different programmes," says Kamat. Colors' big ticket reality show 'Fear Factor-Khatron Ke Khiladi' has opened with 1.7 (on 21st July) TVR, which went to a high of 2.27 on 24th July. 'Balika Vadhu' managed a high TVR of 1.26 and mythological 'Jai Sri Krishna' notched a maximum of 0.92 TVR on 21st July. Colors will launch the second season of 'Bigg Boss' after completion of 16-episodes of its driver show 'Fear Factor'. The channel has already endorsed original format (Big Brother) winner Shilpa Shetty for the show. Whilst there are plans to launch Colors in the UK, there is no concrete information on this. TV Eighteen's previous channel CNN IBN was available in the South Asia World avatar before ending after its distribution agreement ended with ZEE Network UK. 'Paanchvi' outperforms rivals celebrity shows
From Biz Asia. Posted June 11 2008, 5.58pm
One can't miss the array of Bollywood celebrities descending on the small screen, since the craze started in 2000 with legend Amitabh Bachchan on 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'. Last weekend saw Salman Khan debut as a TV host after numerous appearances as a special guest on other programmes. According to the overnight TV audience measurement system from Audience Measurement and Analytics (AMap), '10 Ka Dum' on Sony Entertainment Television Asia, had an average of 1.65% and a television rating (TRP) of 2.6% during peak time. As compared to KBC3, which unfurled on January 22, 2007, which had an average rating of 3.4% and a peak rating of 4.9%, 10 Ka Dum is way below. 'Junoon-Kuch Kar Dikhane Ka', which starred Hrithik Roshan as a celebrity judge being telecasted on NDTV Imagine, had an average rating of 0.82% and a peak rating of 1.1%. ZEE TV's programme 'Rock And Roll Family', which has Ajay Devgan, Kajol and Tanuja as celebrity judges, and launched on 14th March, had an average TRP of 2.4% and a peak of 3.2%, according to AMap. Similarly, 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge 4', with Shatrughan Sinha as a judge on STAR One, also managed to score just 0.54% as average rating and 1% as peak rating. In comparison, Shah Rukh Khan hosted 'Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hain', debut on April 25, had an average rating of 2.7% with a peak of 3.5%. (more)

ZEE Next to launch in UK "within days"
From Biz Asia. Posted May 31 2008, 7.22pm
ZEE Network's second general Hindi entertainment channel, ZEE Next, is planning to launch on Sky Digital in the UK "within days". Since last weekend, ZEE Network UK channels have been flashing a "Coming Soon" promo consisting of the ZEE Next channel ID. ZEE Next's strapline 'Dil Wahi, Dhadkan Nayi' meaning 'the heart is the same but a new heartbeat" will offer an alternative to the saas bahu soaps being offered on flagship channel ZEE TV. When the channel launched in India, last December, ZEE Next business head Punit Goenka said, "While ZEE TV concentrates on stories inside the home, the new channel will narrate stories from outside. The channel will address more contemporary issues especially in its portrayal of women. Although its main target will be the youth demographic, it will not alienate the housewife." With newcomers 9X and NDTV Imagine grabbing a majority of the market pie, ZEE Next has struggled to create the impact that bosses had wanted. Even though some programmes have received a good response, the channel has faced distribution problems. Last month, a ZEE spokesman said that ZEE Next was to be revived with more hours dedicated to original programming and distribution problems rectified. "There is a full-blown expansion plan for ZEE Next over the next two months. The focus will be on programming and distribution. The channel's peak investment requirement is Rs 3 billion on the channel. We will be spending more money on distribution and are also increasing original content on the channel," said a source in the company. ZEE UK officials declined to comment further on the launch but did confirm ZEE Next will be launching "within days". As always, keep it with BizAsia.co.uk for the exclusive announcement, first. ZEE Network UK recently launched the group's first radio station, ZEE Radio, the UK's only all-Bollywood radio station, broadcasting on 558AM between 07:00 - 13:00 and on DAB digital radio 24 hours a day in Greater London. STAR Plus widens gap over ZEE TV in India
From Biz Asia. Posted April 13 2008, 3.12am
STAR Plus has consolidated its position as the nation's most watched channel, according to latest figures out this week. The latest TAM ratings data (week ended 5th April) show STAR Plus at 361 GRPs, well ahead of ZEE TV, which is at 232 GRPs. This is a huge gain by STAR Plus, particularly if you take into account the fact that in the week ended 16th February, ZEE TV had narrowed the gap to as little as 4 GRPS (STAR Plus 291, ZEE TV 287). ZEE TV could not hold on to the momentum it had built up though and in the weeks that followed, STAR Plus steadily built up its lead. Even with the grand finale of 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li'l Champs' (on 1st March) fetching 6.73 TRPs, it was not enough for ZEE TV to bridge the widening gap. Whilst ZEE TV's shows 'Dulhann', 'Betiyan' and 'Maayka' have been performing well, its new reality show 'Rock-n-Roll Family' has proved less popular than 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' in the same slot. Average ratings of around 4 TRPs has proved a dampener for ZEE TV. In weeks to come, STAR Plus will be stregnthening its output further with the re-introduction of Smriti Irani in 'Kyunki' and the launch of Shah Rukh Khan's gameshow 'Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?'. Sony TV back in Top 3! After a shoddy start to the year, Sony Entertainment Television Asia is back in the wreckening by toppling NDTV Imagine from the number three slot in India. In the week ended 5th April, Sony TV with 88 GRPs is just ahead of NDTV Imagine, which has pocketed 82 GRPs. On the back of reality shows, events (Filmfare awards) and a blockbuster film (Chak De India) Set managed to up its GRP to 110 in the week ended 1st March but in the subsequent week it slipped again. Sony TV too is launching some big shows including the Salman Khan presented 'Power of 10' and the Indian Premier League cricket, which it is showing in India. And the rest... 4. NDTV Imagine & 9X 5. Sahara One (70 GRPs) 6. STAR One (66 GRPs) 7. STAR Utsav (40 GRPs) 8. Sony SAB (32 GRPs) 9. ZEE Next (9 GRPs) Related links: Confirmed: Salman to front show for Sony TV Setanta scoops rights to Indian Premier League Shah Rukh to host another show on STAR Plus (more)

9X surges to fourth position in India

Launched just under five months ago, 9X continues to maintain a steady growth, week on week with it now hoping to catch up with established channels ZEE TV, STAR Plus and Sony Entertainment Television Asia. In Week 14 of data released for India's West, North and East amongst C&S 4+ audiences, 9X is at 83 GRPs. Other GEC channel ratings are as follows: STAR Plus (346 GRPs), ZEE TV (188 GRPs) and Sony (88) GRPs. The characters in Ramayan will be essayed by a new generation of actors – Gurmeet Choudhary will play the lead of Lord Ram, while Debina Bonnerjee plays Sita. The 3 key characters - Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughan will be played by Ankit Arora, Vije Bhatia and Lalit Negi respectively. Commenting on the show announcement, Mr. Prem Sagar said, “Ramayan like river Ganga is sacred, timeless and unmeasureable. A dip in the values of idealism and sacrifice embodied in Ramayan is like a bath in the Ganga that purifies your thought, speech and action and washes away all evil gathered as time has moved life. Twenty years ago, our revered father Dr. Ramanand Sagar created a revolution through a blockbuster show. Now, we the second and third generation hopes to recreate the same magic”. Adds Mr. Nair, “Ramayan has a huge connect with audiences across the country and has all the elements that will deliver on our promise to entertain and delight. The Sagar’s are powerful storytellers and the final word in creating mythological epics for television and we believe that our partnership has the potential to make Ramayan a show that the whole family will watch together every evening.” NDTV Imagine will hit TV screens in India on Monday 21st January. It will offer programming across genres, ranging from light-hearted family soaps to period dramas and from high voltage music and dance entertainers to the most glamorous events in the entertainment business. NDTV Imagine is looking at launching in the UK later this year. (more)

The channel will launch with four hours of original programming with a total of ten new shows during primetime. This will go up to twelve by 1st April 2008, reveals NDTV Imagine CEO Sameer Nair. UTV in talks to launch business news channel
From Biz Asia. Posted June 7 2007, 9.02am
Ronnie Screwvala-promoted UTV Software Communications is in talks with the Walt Disney-owned American Broadcasting Company News (ABC News) for launching a business news channel. Sources in the know said the foreign media company would pick up a minority stake in the venture and provide technical support. The laws allow a foreign company to pick up a maximum 26 per cent stake in a news venture. The discussions were at an advanced stage, and the deal would be announced shortly, they said. Walt Disney holds 14.85 per cent stake in UTV as on 31st March 2007. When contacted, an ABC News spokesperson said, "We are exploring various opportunities for our television content business in India and Asia Pacific and have nothing to announce at the moment." However, attempts to reach the UTV CEO Screwvala failed. An e-mail query sent to him on Tuesday remained unanswered. Media buyers believe there is room for more broadcasters to enter the space. "The men-focused brands are fueling the growth of advertising. Considering that news channels, and more specifically business news channels, address the needs of these brands, entry of news broadcasters is good news for advertisers," said Manish Porwal, managing director (India-south&west), Starcom. UTV Software Communication is into motion pictures, new media (gaming and animation), broadcast and television content. The company is slated to launch a bouquet of eight channels in a year under its subsidiary, UTV Broadcasting. Its first channel, Bindass – a youth channel – is expected to go on air by September. This will be followed by regional channels in the same genre. The company has already announced the launch of the world cinema channel Olive. UTV will be the second player entering the news broadcasting space this year after the earlier announcement by INX media, led by Indrani Mukerjea, wife of ex-STAR Group chief executive officer Peter Mukerjea. INX plans to launch 12 channels, with four dedicated to news (one national news channel and three city-specific news channels). As of now, there are only few broadcasters in the business news space, including NDTV Profit and TV 18’s CNBC-TV18 and CNBC Awaaz. Article from Business Standard (more)

'KBC' and 'Koffee With Karan' to move to NDTV?
From Biz Asia. Posted January 27 2007, 12.41pm
A strong rumour doing the rounds is that Star's two new posh shows 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' and 'Koffee with Karan' will follow Karan Johar and Samir Nair into NDTV's soon-to-be-launched entertainment channel. "How can that be? My relationship with STAR during the first season of 'Koffee...' has been fantastic. At the same time my association with NDTV is my future on television. Let's see how it goes. I don't want to jump the gun and make plans for the future. 'Koffee with Karan' is a STAR brand-show," says Karan currently in Dubai promoting 'Koffee...' As for Sameer Nair's move into NDTV. "Pranoy Roy who's the man behind NDTV is a great visionary. I'm proud to be part of NDTV. As for Samir, he's a tremendously intelligent man. He has proven himself time and again in the world of television. And I'm sure he'll be a winner in whatever he does." Fatigued, he brightens as he watches his closest friend Shah Rukh on the first episode of the new 'KBC'. "I haven't been on the set to watch him shoot. But I did his clothes on 'KBC'. I just hope my 'Koffee...' matches up to the high standards set by Shah Rukh. We've put in our best. This time around I'm far more relaxed with the format. I'm hoping I'm less worried with my guests. I'm no longer a debutant." Karan sees 2007 as one of his busiest years. "Not just busy but also a very different year. Because television gets priority." Does he like his new role as a TV tycoon? "Television is the future. Anyone in the visual media is advised to take the plunge. I'm happy to have my talk show on one channel and the privilege of making software for another channel. I was lucky to get the opportunity to get into TV ahead of my colleagues. And that NDTV, a channel I really respect, considered me good enough for their entertainment channel is really flattering for me. Because at the end of the day, I’m not a TV person. I'm a filmmaker." He singles out Shah Rukh as the pioneer on television. "Even before he became a superstar in the movies he was a well-known name on television. So he's come a full circle. Shah Rukh is an entertainer and a warm, emotional human being. That combination will succeed tremendously in 'KBC'. I've seen how he interacts with all his loyal fans. Shah Rukh is very confident on television. As for me I want to entertain on both television and in cinema. I'm full of ideas." Would he make feature films for television? "Whatever they want me to do on NDTV I'll do for them. But tele-films? Nooooo! I don't think so. The two mediums are totally exclusive. Television is for talk shows, game shows etc. I'll make feature films only for the big screen. I'll make software for NDTV. With Shah Rukh doing television that sense of television being cinema's poor cousin is gone. If you ask me, my brand value has tripled after my talk show on television. More people want to see my films because they see me on television. It's a communication medium of instant gratification. I love it. But cinema is my first love. I've enough time to take care of both mediums. As a filmmaker, I've my own directorial venture this year. Then there's my associate Tarun's film and an animation film. There's lots of room for television. I've learnt one thing from my father. Never put your feet up. How can they be up? They should always be on the ground for walking. There's always time to do more." Article from IndiaFM Related links: It's official! Top bosses quit STAR India Dharma Productions buys stake in NDTV channel (more)
